ACCORDING TO RESEARCH THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO TO HAVE SURVIVED {local pick up or in house shipping available} The Enigma D A26 serial number A320 was bought by GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) in 1926 or 1927. It was subsequently analyzed by Hugh Foss, who wrote a detailed description and devised a method for breaking it. Ten years later, in April 1937, it helped William Bodsworth when first breaking the Enigma traffic between the Spanish Navy (Franco) and the Italian Navy (Mussolini). The cypher machine shown above is Serial # 319. Is this cypher machine a lost link in history also? Enigma D is an electro­mechanical rotor-based cipher machine, developed in 1926 by Chiffrier­maschinen Aktiengesellschaft (ChiMaAG) in Berlin (Germany), as the successor to the Enigma C. Like its predecessor, it uses light bulbs for its output, and is therefore known as a Glüh­lampen­chiffrier­maschine (glow lamp cipher machine). The machine is also known by its model number A26, and by the internal designator Ch. 8. It was succeeded a year later by the very similar Enigma K (A27). Enigma D was the core design on which all later Enigma models were based. It seems likely that in 1926, the Enigma D was the core design on which all future designs would be (partly) based. The Enigma D itself was short-lived and was succeeded a year later, in 1927, by the Enigma K (A27). Enigma I and Zählwerk Enigma A28 are both based on Enigma D and K. The Enigma machines, when they can be found regularly bring in the 6 figures, and an example recently sold for over $400,000. {local pick up or in house shipping available}  3 3/4" Tall, 3 1/4" Wide - Ed Rithner (1890-?) worked at Crescent Glass in Wheeling West Virginia with his father and brother before going out on his own in 1939, making glass creation including signature paperweights, and retired in 1951. This paperweight is a classic design of his with an eight-petal flower with white edged teal flowers around a white center with a bubble growing from a bed of teal and white glass, mounted on a cookie base with a flattened side so that it can be used as book ends.
