EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL MATCHING NUMBERED THOMPSON MACHINE GUN 50 ROUND “L” DRUM MAGAZIN

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 1 of 324)

High condition, matching numbered early original 50 round “L” drum for the Colt Model 1921 Thompson machine gun. Drum is marked “AUTO-ORDNANCE CORP, NEW YORK N.Y., U.S.A. PATENTED JULY 27 1920 DEC 7 1920 “NO 2072” on main body with matching numbered cover. Original nickel rotor inside. These early drums were contracted through John’s Machine and Stamping Works Company. According to Gordon Herigstad, the highest-numbered John’s ”L” drum is number 4184. Not very many, considering how many guns were manufactured that could accept them. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish of drum is extremely fine original smooth blue finish with fine coverage, particularly on the cover. The body of the drum has some brown patina which is not particularly noticeable, and some loss or finish to a gray patina in places, especially at the high edges. One can see upon inspection of the interior that this drum was carried loaded, as there are rings from the cartridges very visible inside. These are a far scarcer drum to find than even the 100 round numbered drums. A fine drum for the discerning forward-thinking Thompson investor and collector. JWK 2024-05-107.

(A) FABULOUS HIGH CONDITION ORIGINAL ARMY PURCHASED "LONG MODEL" COLT MODEL 1875 GATLING GUN ON ORIG

Lot # 1011 (Sale Order: 2 of 324)

This is absolutely one of the finest condition original Gatling guns offered for public auction in the last 25 years. It is one of 44 "Long" Gatling guns purchased by the U.S. Army. Serial number 130 on right side of the frame, assembly numbers "34" matching on all the original bolts and barrels, and numbered “47” at top front of frame. This cataloger removed and examined each bolt, and each bolt matched its respective barrel, and each bears the same assembly number "34". This is a ten-barrel Gatling gun on its original “N.J.” marked wood carriage with original furnishings including original iron-bound wheels, no ammunition boxes present. Original brass plate on top of the gun reads “GATLING'S BATTERY GUN / MADE BY COLT'S / PT. FIRE ARMS / MFG CO / HARTFORD, CONN. / U.S.A." with patent dates. Original brass elevation screw and adjustment wheel. Five original gravity feed vertical magazines are included with this gun. PROVENANCE: Presented to Lafayette College by William Simon, class of 1952, as indicated by display sign included with this gun. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine with correct gray patina barrels, which were never blued. This cataloger examined each bore and all are near excellent, shiny and bright. It is just incredible to find a Gatling gun of this vintage in this condition. Wood is extremely fine, solid and serviceable with some cracks from age yet still presenting exceptionally well. Mechanics are extremely fine and smooth. This cataloger made many rotations incidental to removing and carefully examining each bolt. This gun is an amazing piece, and its originality and condition are especially impressive. A piece of history of in original configuration as it would have been in the 1870s. Like the Gatling Custer unfortunately left behind and did not take to his engagement at the Little Big Horn. No telling if there will ever be a Gatling combining so many favorable elements offered for sale again. JWK 2024-05-078. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. TWO MG-15 MACHINE GUN WATER COOLED JACKETS W/O BARRELS WITH CLAMP ON SHOULD BRACE AND CARRYING HANDL

Lot # 1019 (Sale Order: 5 of 324)

Lot consists of two fine condition well-made Romanian manufactured water jacket assemblies for the German MG-15 machine gun, and one clamp on shoulder brace to go on the MG-15, and a carrying handle for one of the water jackets. Original (not Nazi-marked) bipod on one of the jackets with leather retention strap. Late in WWII the German had more MG-15 machine guns than they had aircraft to emplace them into. Since there was always a need for more machine guns in a ground support role, the Germans (and Romanians) manufactured water-cooled jacket assemblies, which screwed right onto the MG-15 receivers in the place of the air-cooled shrouds. This provided for a longer sustained period of fire (something very useful in a defensive role). As a production shortcut, the shoulder brace was simplified to a non-hinged shoulder plate. A carrying handle that clamped onto the water jacket made it easier to move the gun about. No barrels are included with this lot, but IMA had many of them at one time, and they surface from time to time on the secondary collector’s market from time to time. One drain cover missing from one jacket as well as the cork, but the cork hardware is present. CONDITION: Fine original paint on one jacket flaking to a gray patina. Near excellent original green paint on the other jacket, which retains bipod and leather strap. Shoulder brace is fine with the leather in need of some restorative oil. Carrying handle near excellent. If you want to spend more time shooting your MG-15 at the range instead of letting it cool off, these are the parts you need. JWK 2024-05-145.

Just the thing for a recreational MG-15 shooting enthusiast. These reproduction shrouds sold out a long time ago, and now are only available on the secondary market from time to time. WORLD WAR I FRENCH CHAUCHAT MODEL 1915 MACHINE GUN PARTS WITH SAW CUT RECEIVER PIECES, BARELY DAMAGE

Lot # 1038 (Sale Order: 7 of 324)

If you need, or someday hope, to reactivate a deactivated Chauchat machine gun you will not want to miss this part lot. It has parts in it which are absolutely crucial for the task. Many Chauchat machine guns were sold to Finland when the French updated their machine gun models in the 1930s. About 3100 of these guns in Finland were imported into the United States between 1959 – 1962, and sold on the American collectors market as registered deactivated guns. The deactivation carried out on these guns prior to their sale was grievous, often with the bolt faces severely ground and/or torch welded, and the chambers of the barrels plugged and also severely welded in such a way that salvaging them incidental to reactivation was essentially a daunting/impossible task. Although this mattered little decades ago, the rise in interest in these historic WWI guns combined with the availability of good modern boxer primed ammunition has caused the prices these guns to command as viable operational machine gun to rise to levels that would have astounded our ancestors. This parts offering includes the two key parts that one needs to reactivate one of these old 1960s registered deactivated guns. The bolt and firing pin, and a barrel that never had the chamber welded. Other sought-after parts included here are a set of front and rear anti-aircraft sights, saw cut upper receiver pieces should one wish to build up a display gun, as well as pistol grip assembly, buttstock, charging handle, vertical fore-end assembly, bipod legs and attachment hardware, and small screws and pins. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is generally very good to fine original blue finish thinning to a gray and brown patina. Wood butstock has a large chip out of the right side but this piece is present with remnants of glue where someone attempted to repair it in the past. Bore of barrel is very good with strong rifling, albeit with some pitting. The bolt face in this lot has only a very small part of the lower edge broken away, and the firing pin tip is intact. If you have ever had or contemplated reactivation of one of these guns, you know how difficult it is to obtain these parts in this condition. JWK 2024-05-049.

One of the most sought after accessories for the early Thompson machine gun is the numbered 50 round "L" drum. This one is not only matching numbered "2157" but also marked on both body and cover "MGM" as that film studio's property. One can contemplate the classic films this drum might well have been used in. Perhaps James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, or one of your other favorite stars used this very drum on screen. Drum is marked “AUTO-ORDNANCE CORP, NEW YORK N.Y., U.S.A. PATENTED JULY 27 1920 DEC 7 1920 “NO 2157” on main body with matching numbered cover. Original nickel rotor inside. MP43 PARTS KIT WITH BLACK PLASTIC CASE.

Lot # 1130 (Sale Order: 18 of 324)

Exceptional parts kit of an ERMA (ayf) MP-43 manufactured in 1944 machine gun. Receiver is cut several times with a significant piece of receiver not present. Remainder is marked “ayf” (ERMA) on receiver forward of the magazine housing. Sheet metal stamped receiver manufactured by “cos” (Mertzwerke), which was a sub-contracter who supplied parts for many German weapons. “ayf” also visible in sling recess of buttstock, with hand-scratched “TEMP” (probably the G.I. who brought the gun back). Visible numbers are matching on magazine well (8351i), operating piston (8351), pistol grip assembly (8351), and buttstock hardware (351). Bolt is non-matching (6519). Includes one original “fxo” MP43 marked magazine. The MP44 was the first true modern “assault rifle” chambered for a shorter than standard rifle cartridge (33 mm vs 57 mm) which although less powerful than the standard 8 mm German rifle round was still very effective at medium ranges where most combat took place. This allowed the individual soldier to carry plenty of ammunition in 30-round magazines so that the rifle could be effective in close-quarters combat as well. Capable of both semi-automatic and fully-automatic fire with the pressing of a switch at the side of the receiver this first modern "assault rifle" could fill the role of a deliberate aimed fire weapon, as well as that of a suppressing fire weapon. This rifle was constructed of metal stampings to the maximum extent possible to save production time and cost. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original finish turning a brown and gray patina. Internals are extremely fine. Original wood grips and buttstock are fine, showing light bruises and handling marks. Hardware at top rear of stock slightly buckled upward. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt is early type without cut-out at extractor and extremely fine. This is about as nice a parts set as this cataloger has ever seen of one of these guns. No doubt the competition for this lot will be fierce on auction day. ERMA produced guns do not surface for sale very often, and this kit would make a very attractive display piece or re-work into a semi-auto. JWK 2024-05-135.
