Philip Russell Goodwin Buffalo Oil Painting

Lot # 752 (Sale Order: 751 of 1263)

Oil on Board. Title is Standing Buffalo. 6" by 4 1/2". Has been conserved and cleaned by Las Negras Studio. Treatment Report is included. Provenance: The Work of Philip G...moreoodwin From the Collection of the Mamaroneck Public Library New York. The artist; T. Raymond Goodwin, the artist's brother; Mamaroneck Public Library, New York, acquired from the above, 1938. Philip Russell Goodwin (1881 - 1935) was active/lived in New York, Connecticut. Philip Goodwin is known for Animal, field-stream illustration. The release of one of the greatest and most endearing publications in American history, Call of the Wild, in July 1903 would have a profound effect on the career of Charles M. Russell, even though he had nothing to do with it. Who illustrated the book? Not Frederic Remington and not Carl Rungius. No, it was illustrated by a twenty-two year old wunderkind named Philip R. Goodwin who had just opened his New York City studio. Jack London’s novel Call of the Wild was an overnight sensation. The book earned him international acclaim, and royalties from his novels made him the highest paid author in America to date. With an impressive career ahead of him, which included illustrating African Game Trails (1909) by Theodore Roosevelt and hundreds of sporting art images—one of the most famous being the Winchester Horse and Rider (1919) logo—Goodwin would be one of the artists that greatly influenced Charles M. Russell for the rest of his career. Philip Russell Goodwin was born on September 16, 1881—not 1882 as often erroneously written—in Norwich, Connecticut. Early on he was recognized as a child prodigy attending the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design when he was only fourteen. He soon caught the eye of America’s most famous illustrator, Howard Pyle, who taught such greats as Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, Harvey Dunn, Frank Schoonover, W.H.D. Koerner, and Frank Stick. Pyle started the Brandywine School in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania where many of the great illustrators would study over the years. Goodwin was training there as a teenager ahead of N.C. Wyeth. Casper Whitney who took over the position of publisher and editor of Outing magazine in 1901 soon commissioned young Goodwin to paint a dozen illustrations for several articles. It was Goodwin who introduced Russell to Whitney, who immediately became a big supporter of the cowboy artist. Goodwin accepted an invitation by the Russells to visit them at Bull Head Lodge in Glacier National Park in Montana in the summer of 1907. By that time the young New Yorker had illustrated a dozen books—including the Call of the Wild; dozens of magazine articles; three covers of the great magazine of the day, The Saturday Evening Post; and sporting advertisements for Harrington and Richardson Arms Company; Kemper Thomas Company; Marble Arms and Manufacturing Company; Marlin Firearms Co.; Peters Cartridge Company; Savage-Stevens; and Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Amazingly, he was only twenty-five years old. The two artists painted outdoors together for the first time. Lacking formal training, Russell learned much from his younger counterpart as evidenced by masterpieces he generated during the next few years. By the time Goodwin returned in 1910, he had illustrated African Game Trails (1909) by the most famous and popular man in the world, Theodore Roosevelt who called on the best sporting artist in America known for his ability to capture arrested motion. Goodwin would never visit Montana again, although the artists corresponded on occasion. In 1911 Goodwin spent six weeks in the Canadian Rockies with Carl Rungius who was generally regarded as the most accomplished big game painter. Like Goodwin, Rungius relied on sketches and field photography to lend detail to paintings completed back in the studio. In August 1911 Rungius invited Goodwin to join him and guide Jimmy Simpson on a hunting and sketching trip. As was the case with Russell, Rungius’s paintings were transformed by his time with Goodwin. National advertising flourished after the war during the roaring twenties as Americans confidently acquired material possessions and had the leisure time to use them. Advertising men answered new desires by establishing brand names that delicately encouraged dissatisfaction with possessions seemingly outmoded but not necessarily worn out. It was the beginning of a golden period for sporting illustration that kept Goodwin busy for years. His work landed on calendars, envelopes, posters, prints, magazine covers, die cut counter top displays, among many other items. But happy days were over in the 1930s as the Great Depression ravaged almost every American home. In 1912 Goodwin had relocated to Mamaroneck, New York. Eight years later, he moved to another home with a studio located behind it. A life-long bachelor, Goodwin was joined by his mother who lived with him until her death. The Depression battered gun sales. Guns were no longer the tools of sportsmen, but were perceived as t

Charles M Russell Piegan Brave Plaster Model

Lot # 754 (Sale Order: 753 of 1263)

The original plaster Piegan Brave by Charles M Russell. This is the only known plaster model of it's kind made. There was nothing that Charles Russell loved more than mak...moreing small, painted plaster sculptures which he could give as presents as a true gesture of friendship. From the Estate of Dr. Van Kirke Nelson - Kalispell, MT. Measures: 2 2/5" tall, 1 1/3" by 1" wide. This model's nose has been lost to time. The feather in the top right of the plaster on the Brave's head is representative of the same portrait sitting that Russell painted. That original watercolor sold in 1997 at auction. Charles Marion Russell (1864 - 1926) was active/lived in Montana, California, Missouri. Charles Russell is known for Indian-frontier genre painting, sculpture. Charles M. Russell, the nostalgic, held tight memories of a youthful past when the West belonged to God. There was a sense of loss, as poignant as losing a loved one. The specter of what this loss meant loomed over Russell the rest of his life. He was the quintessential nostalgic who grabbed history and married it to idealized memory and imagination. For example, despite Russell never witnessing a buffalo hunt, it became the basis for his most popular and desired art. Nancy Russell explained, "No man can be a painter without imagination." The Romantic art of the nineteenth century was the cornerstone to build the West reimagined for not only Russell, but also his contemporaries and future artists. No Western American artist fought back harder against racism, sexism, and championed environmentalism more than did Charles M. Russell. He thrived on imagining a time when the land was pristine, women were held in high regard, and people of color were the heroes. Paradoxically, the industrialized world championed just the opposite. To many, his life appeared odd—that cowboy hat, that sash, that unruly hair, that folksy talk. He and his art embraced an identity of an exile from a different place and time, which is even more appealing today. In that way, Russell was a visionary who instilled hope in all who saw his art, and his heart. For those reasons and much more, he is the most beloved of all the Western American artists. The Charles M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana; the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma in Norman; the Charles M. Russell Center Series on Art and Photography of the American West (books published by the University of Oklahoma University Press); the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in Montana; the Russell Riders; and the Russell Skull Society are a testament to that fact. The Cowboy Artists of America have been called "The Sons of Charlie Russell" by art historian B. Byron Price for good reason. Russell was a legendary painter, sculptor, and author. Ever humble and self-effacing, as his fame skyrocketed, he never forgot his cowboy friends. The importance of his life and works is that no one has inspired more new generations of artists. Russell lived in the past and his wife Nancy who was his business manager lived for the future. How could a self-trained artist living in remote Montana become the highest paid artist in America? It’s quite a story. Charles Marion Russell was born on March 19, 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, a bustling gateway to the West of some 200,000 people. Family history and adventure stories such as the Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper lured Russell to the West. On a crisp March day in 1880 Charles M. Russell jumped off the stagecoach in Helena, Montana Territory and took his turn as the latest easterner seeking western adventure. Accompanying him was Willis L.W. "Pike" Miller, a family acquaintance who acted as Russell’s guardian and gave him his first job in Montana on a sheep ranch Miller owned in the Judith Basin. While Miller was kind enough to chaperone Russell, they soon parted ways because Russell wanted nothing to do with sheepherding. For twelve years Russell and his horse Monte were together on the open range mainly nighthawking—somewhat of a lowly cowboy job of watching the horses overnight while the rest of the cowboys slept—until 1893 when Russell began transitioning from cowboy artist to full-time artist. Only a teenager, Russell was younger than most cowboys who were usually in their early twenties but shared with them the qualities of being gregarious, humble, energetic and adventuresome. Charlie saw the cowboy as the last frontiersman—unlike the colorless overburdened farmer and sheep herder. The period from 1906 to 1910 was one of the most productive and enjoyable times of Charlie’s life, which in no small part was due to the summers at Bull Head Lodge and the mentoring by others such as Philip R. Goodwin who visited him there in 1907 and 1910. Glacier National Park has the type of views that keep postcard publishers in business. The mountains fanned the flames of Charlie Russell’s creative genius. He understood that the mo

Ray Swanson Native American Girl Oil Painting

Lot # 758 (Sale Order: 757 of 1263)

Title is Plains Indian Girl. Oil on Canvas. 15 1/4" by 21 1/4" framed. 8" by 14" unframed. Ray Swanson (1937 - 2004) was active/lived in Arizona, South Dakota. Ray Swanso...moren is known for Indian figure, genre and portrait painting. In the boulder-strewn hills of Carefree, just north of Scottsdale, stands an elegant Santa Fe style home and studio. It is here amid the tall Saguaro and rough rocks that Ray Swanson's love of the Native Americans and their fading lifestyles is put to canvas under the watchful eye of the Sonoran desert which seems to merge with his studio through panoramic windows facing the venerable Black Mountain. A South Dakota native who was raised in a rural environment, Ray has come to identify with the gentle people who inhabit the bold and visually stark lands of the Colorado Plateau. His connection to these people is an outgrowth of his own rural roots where simplicity allowed one to feel a sense of communion with nature. It was on one of Ray's first trips to Arizona that he knew he had to chronicle the lives of the Native Americans as he could see that their lifestyles were under attack from outside forces. Over the years as he has painted among the Navajo and Pueblo peoples, Ray has witnessed drastic changes in their patterns of dress, use of modern forms of transportation and construction of non traditional housing. He finds a great sense of satisfaction in being able to bring to life in either oil or watercolor the time-honored lifestyles that are quickly fading from everyday view. Collectors from all over the world seek out the art of Ray Swanson. He depicts both the native peoples and their way of life with tenderness and dignity. His style is considered as representational, with every detail clearly visible. His success won him election to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America in 1986. His resume includes numerous awards and a recent book, "The Art of Ray Swanson - Celebrating People and Lifestyles". Over the years, Ray has chronicled traditional ways of life in both Europe and Asia, but he is still most noted for his spiritual and emotional depictions of the Native Americans of the Southwest.

William Bill Gollings Indian Camp Painting

Lot # 759 (Sale Order: 758 of 1263)

Watercolor Painting of a Cheyenne Indian Camp. 24 1/2" by 30" framed. William Bill Gollings (1878 - 1932) was active/lived in Wyoming, Idaho. William Gollings is known fo...morer Western genre-figure, animal, etcher. Bill Gollings (Elling William) did paintings known for their accurate accountings of the Old West. Gollings drew upon his own personal experiences as a cowboy, and was also known to have studied and admired the drawings of Frederic Remington, which often appeared in 'Harper's Weekly' magazine. Bill Gollings was born in 1878 in Pierce City, Idaho. As a boy, he spent much of his time was in New York, Idaho and Michigan. When he was twelve, he and his family moved to Chicago. At age nineteen, Gollings traveled to small mining and cattle towns in South Dakota and Nebraska where he spent most of his time as a sheepherder and cowboy. Despite his ranching activities, he had always possessed an interest in art. His first exposure to paints was at about age twenty-five when he began working with a set of mail-order paints. After selling several paintings, he was admitted to the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts on a scholarship. Returning to Wyoming, he spent time on a Cheyenne reservation as a cowboy once again. Gollings maintained his interest in art and became proficient in etching under the guidance of Wyoming artist Hans Kleiber. In 1909, Gollings built a studio in Sheridan, Wyoming, giving up ranch life. He did, however, continue to supplement his income by punching cattle and breaking horses. In Sheridan he devoted himself to his painting of western scenes, using "Gollings" and a pony-track symbol to sign his works.

Randy Van Beek Indian Camp Oil Painting

Lot # 760 (Sale Order: 759 of 1263)

Title is Amongst the Clouds. 18" by 24" unframed. 26" by 32" framed. Randy Van Beek (Born 1958) is active/lives in Washington. Randy Van Beek is known for Western landsca...morepe painting-Indian encampments. Randy Van Beek was born June 28, 1958, and raised in the Pacific Northwest. As a child he exhibited exceptional artistic talent with a specific interest in drawing. His drawings portrayed his different interests throughout childhood. After graduating from high school, Randy pursued no formal art training. During that period, Abstraction and Expressionism were the trends for most art colleges. Randy's interest was always Traditional Realism, so he sought out his own education. Living near Western Washington University gave him access to their extensive art library where he studied and practiced the techniques of his favorite master artists. Most of his attention was focused on the eighteenth century Dutch and Austrian masters, and the nineteenth century American painters, particularly the Hudson River School Group. The time spent in museums in the U.S. and Europe also proved invaluable to his artistic development. His work has evolved into a unique style truly his own, but the influence of the masters is evident. He uses many of the glazing techniques or transparent layers of colors. An illusion of depth is created as light travels through these layers of transparent color instead of immediately reflecting off of an opaque surface. He is continually striving to improve in composition, which is the most intellectual aspect in painting---the design and arrangement of dark and light masses, the harmonious union of line, form and color to which a viewer is attracted. He develops the composition to communicate a message or a sensation. Of his working method, he said: "Whenever I travel I carry my painting equipment and camera. When I discover a scene or an effect that excites me, something unique, I attempt to capture what I feel or the impression of my visual experience." Later in the studio Randy refers to the outdoor study paintings as well as the photographs to execute larger works. When he composes these more complex versions, he may incorporate figures, children, or wildlife, sometimes creating a story. Randy enjoys a broad range of subjects and painting styles. "I don't want to limit myself to a theme in subjects, or a repetitive formula in techniques. I need to continually challenge myself. The creative process is over once I've accomplished something, and it's that process I'm most passionate about. I think the creative mind is one of God's most fascinating gifts. I see it as a responsibility to explore and develop my gift, but mostly to share what I've created. We can seek solace in the appreciation of beauty. Art, music, and literature can elevate our spirit providing relief from the common place. A work of art is passed on for centuries, communicating ones personal insights in a particular era." Randy is concerned with the preservation of natural areas on our planet and hopes his work will inspire others to share in the responsibility of maintaining balance between conservation, economic, and social needs. A portion of the proceeds from Art Impressions West, Inc., goes toward organizations that preserve and improve wildlife habitat thus promoting our quality and enjoyment of life now and for future generations. A partial list of memberships include: World Wildlife Fund, National Park Foundation, Wilderness Society, Whatcom County Land Trust, and Children's Compassion International.

Walter Cooke England Ship Watercolor Painting

Lot # 764 (Sale Order: 763 of 1263)

Unusual painting depicting a grounded ship during a storm. On the Coast of Cornwall England. Back of painting makes note of the painting being done by the son of Edward W...moreilliam Cooke. C.M. Russell Museum tag attributes the painting to a Walter Cooke. 18" by 24 1/2" framed. Edward William Cooke (1811 - 1880) was active/lived in United Kingdom. Edward Cooke is known for Landscape, seascape, marine. The London-born son of engraver George Cooke, Edward's first artistic endeavor was the sketch book, "Shipping and Craft" in which he presented 50-plate engravings from his drawings of sea-going vessels. Six years later he would begin a long association with the British Royal Academy, where he would exhibit 129 paintings over his career. Scholarly pursuits led Cooke to associate with intellectual giants. A member of the fellows of the Royal Society and numerous other such organizations, he was widely traveled and read. The beaches of Holland and the Canals of Venice were two of his favorite and repeated destinations. Still, his affinity with the common British folk of the fishing trades held through his life, painting views of the coastal activities of his native land far more than any other. He painted views of coastal waters which are best described with the oxymoron complexly simple. Each is a complete composition, usually full of places, landmarks and people which singularly could be the focus, yet the minute items present important natural context to his scenes. Combined with his enormous talent for subtle coloration and presentation of graduated light, it is in agreement that Cooke is to be held in the highest regard as a top-quality artist of the 19th century.

Mark Rohrig Native American Indian Painting

Lot # 765 (Sale Order: 764 of 1263)

30" by 40". Oil on Canvas. Title is War Shirt. Condition Note: Has some cracklure as shown, it is in need of stabilization and conservation. Mark Rohrig (Born 1955) is ac...moretive/lives in Colorado. Mark Rohrig is known for Native American theme painting, landscape and figure. Born in 1955 in Grand Junction, Colorado, Mark Rohrig showed talent at an early age. He is a surrealist/realist painter who is inspired by the mystical nobility of the Native American culture. Rohrig is self-taught except for some tutoring from a middle school teacher, Frances West, and a handful of classes at Mesa State College. Rohrig's artwork is a reflection of life experience and perseverance that forges a common bond between him and Native Americans. Since 1975 he has been creating these images and continues to be inspired by the Native American spirit. He intends his paintings to be vibrant and spiritual, from the vast landscapes with multiple braves, to stark portraits of weary warriors, and multi-textured backgrounds with a stalwart figure that embodies spiritual values. Building his paints up from gray tones and working without photos, he is very private about his work, allowing only close friends into his studio. Frank Howell was an influence and mentor, he and Howell forged a friendship over 30 years ago.

Louis De Mayo Acrylic on Canvas Indian Painting

Lot # 771 (Sale Order: 770 of 1263)

Title is Standing Indian Brave. Acrylic on Canvas. 31" by 41" framed, 30" by 40" unframed. Louis De Mayo (1926 - 2016) was active/lived in Pennsylvania, Arizona. Louis De...more Mayo is known for Modern western Indian figure painting, symbolic dress, birds. Because there are so many fine variations to the Southwest story, each told with skill and insight, it is all the more remarkable to discover a completely fresh vision. Phoenix artist, De Mayo, indeed has his own tale to tell. What bold, daring and controlled simplicity fill his canvases come from a personal selection of activities that the artist has witnessed in his expeditions to the Indian reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Noble Indian women are engaged in daily tasks or stand casually before the geometric expanse of a woven rug. The males are dramatically arranged whether individually, in pairs, or larger groups, their great forms filling the picture surface with energy and vital presence. In motion or at rest, these figures are adorned with colorful and exotic ornaments and ritual objects...masks, fringed belts, beaded necklaces. Because De Mayo professes to portray a strong sense of isolation in all his paintings, it is not difficult to project further meaning here that relates to the cultural. Says De Mayo, "it is the social issue of the isolation of the Indian from the mainstream of American life. Always a struggle to maintain the traditions." De Mayo has a strong emotional attraction to the Yaqui and their black garb. He grew up seeing women in black. He is Italian and his people too are dark skinned. A strong sense of roots, his own and that of the Indian. De Mayo emphasizes the importance of good design and subtlety of suggestion rather than explicit photo-realism. Details are kept to a minimum and the viewer's imagination quickly fills in the missing information so that the lively figures appear lifelike and credible.

Jean J Perry Oil on Canvas Colorado Painting

Lot # 773 (Sale Order: 772 of 1263)

Title is Western Splendor. 16" by 20" unframed, 23" by 27" framed. Jean J. Perry (Born 1935) is active/lives in Colorado, Kansas. Jean Perry is known for Realist and abst...moreract landscape with buildings, snowscenes, floral views. Jean J. Perry started art classes at age five when her mother sent her to Saturday lessons at the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Mo. Summer classes continued until college where she majored in Fine arts at the University of Colorado. It was during this time that she began painting in an abstract, non-objective style. Jean continued sporadic lessons through the early years of marriage and raising four children. In 1980 Jean and her husband, Gil moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and she decided to make a full time commitment to her love of art. Signing up for a local plein air workshop taught by Mel Fillerup of Wyoming she discovered the joys of painting on location. "We painted every day even in a spring snow storm and I knew I had found my direction." Since that time Jean has continued her art education with classes at the Scottsdale Artists School, workshops with many instructors including private lessons with Mark Daily in Denver. Her style of painting has evolved from abstract to a more traditional form of impressionism working mainly in oil. Landscapes seem to dominate her work but she enjoys painting animals, still life and portraits. Jean has painted and traveled all over the world including Indonesia, Europe, Mexico and Canada. She teaches workshops every year with several different organizations. The most prestigious oil painting organizations in America have voted her a signature membership including the Plein Air Painters of America, Oil Painters of America, Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters Society and an honorary membership in the Tucson Plein Air Painters Society. Her paintings can be found in shows from New York to California including the Arts for the Parks Top 100, The Salmagundi Club in New York City, Laguna Art Museum, Clymer Museum in Washington, Desert Caballeros Museum in Arizona and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California.
