Lot # 3350 (Sale Order: 351 of 749)

Rare Cased London Armoury Co. Kerr's Patent Percussion Revolver

The Kerr revolvers were designed by James Kerr (patent no. 1722 of July 28, 1855) and were manufactured c. 1859-1866 by the London Armoury Company in which Kerr served as factory superintendent. The majority of the Kerr revolvers were exported for use in the American Civil War, with small numbers purchased for use by the Union and around 7,000 revolvers purchased by the Confederacy as Caleb Huse contracted for 100% of the L.A.C. production which also included rifle-muskets. With the end of the Civil War and the defeat of the Confederacy, the London Armoury Company lost its major customer and closed within a year. It comes in a fitted oak case with vacant brass lid escutcheon, London Armoury trade label, loading/cleaning rod with covered worm, capper, Hawksley oiler and powder flask, London Armory Company 54 bore double cavity bullet mold, turnscrew, nipple wrench, bullets, Eley Bros. cap tin, and key.

Class: Antique

Charles Lancaster Four Barrel Thorn Patent Pistol in .476 CF

Lot # 3354 (Sale Order: 355 of 749)

Historic Charles Lancaster Four Barrel Thorn Patent Pistol in .476 Centerfire Documented to British Officer and Sportsman Lieutenant Colonel Charles Eccles Nixon Priestley

Many British officers assigned to Africa and India chose Lancasters as their personal sidearms, but the total production of these pistols is estimated at just 712 further subdivided into smaller volumes in the various calibers. These powerful multi-shot pistols were also popular among the explorers, hunters, and adventurers who wanted more stopping power when facing man and beast in various corners of the British Empire. Included consignor research, including a copy of the factory ledger listing the serial number of the pistol, indicates that this particular pistol was purchased in November 1887 by lieutenant Charles Eccles Nixon Priestley of the Welsh Regiment, who later held various ranks in the army of the British Raj, ending as lieutenant colonel in the 42nd Deoli Regiment. In Priestley's 1931 obituary, he is noted taking an officer's commission at around 18 years old, serving in Egypt, Australia, and India, as well as in the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force in World War I. He is also noted as a celebrated big game hunter and angler, all pursuits in which he would have valued this powerful sidearm. The top flute of the barrel cluster is signed "CHARLES LANCASTER (PATENT) 151. NEW BOND ST. LONDON." and has a blade front sight, and the left flute is marked "455 CF." There are Birmingham proofs on the barrels and frame. The breech face is stamped "CHARLES LANCASTER PATENT" in a circle. The serial number is marked on the trigger guard. The assembly number "84" is on some components. The butt is of bird's head type with checkered walnut grips, a lanyard ring is present at the bottom of the grip strap.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 60% of the period refurbished blue finish with a few scattered patches of light pitting and clear markings overall. The grips are very fine with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A desirable Lancaster four-barrel pistol documented to the British officer that carried it on his worldly adventures!

Webley-Fosbery Automatic Revolver

Lot # 3355 (Sale Order: 356 of 749)

Scarce Webley-Fosbery Automatic Revolver

Manufactured in limited quantity (approximately 4,000 total, all variations), the Webley-Fosbery was meant as a counter-point to the early semi-automatic pistols then emerging on the market, providing the large-bore firepower and relative mechanical simplicity of a revolver with the smooth single-action operation of an automatic. While mechanically novel, the tide of history was on the side of the semi-autos, with Browning's designs in particular able to scratch the firepower itch. Patridge blade front sight and drift adjustable raised notch rear sight. Matching numbers on the barrel, cylinder and frame, "P. WEBLEY & SON. LONDON AND BIRMINGHAM." on top of the rib, "WEBLEY-FOSBERY" on the left side of the top strap, the "flying bullet" trademark ahead of "455 CORDITE" on the left side of the frame, and "SAFE" in raised lettering on the left grip. Fitted with a lanyard ring.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine, with 80% plus arsenal refurbished blue, showing patches of pitting on the barrel, mixed brown patina on the grip frame, bright edge wear, scattered spotting and mild handling marks. The replacement grips are very good, slightly ill-fitting around the butt with mild dents and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.

H. Pieper Experimental Garcia-Reynoso Self-Loading Revolver

Lot # 3356 (Sale Order: 357 of 749)

Unique H. Pieper Experimental Garcia-Reynoso Self-Loading Auto Ejecting Ring Trigger Revolver

This experimental revolver functions in a unique manner, utilizing designs originally conceived by Argentine captain Antonio Garcia-Reynoso, manufactured and patented by Henry Pieper of Liege, Belgium; Henry Pieper was granted Belgian patent number 109,384 on April 5, 1894 for this revolver design, as well as German patent number 81,930 granted May 27, 1894. Loading occurs in a few ways; one of which involves from the top opening of the side mounted magazine, with a spring-loaded follower inside and a spring-loaded catch at the top that keeps the cartridges retained inside. As each round is fired, the round in the chamber to the right of it is automatically ejected, and the "on deck" round is fed into the chamber to left of the fired round from a fixed five-round spring loaded magazine mounted on the left of the frame. The cylinder itself holds six shots, and is able to be loaded from the right side opening. When fully loaded, the revolver has an eleven shot capacity, and the first six shots are able to be fired from the cylinder with the disconnect switch located behind the box magazine engaged to avoid double feeding. Once all six shots are fired out of the cylinder, engaging the switch for the box magazine allows the next five shots to feed. It is chambered for use with a 7.65x30mm Reynoso (also referenced as 7.8x30mm Reynoso) rimless gas sealing cartridge with a tapered case and fully enclosed bullet, similar to the designs of Nagant and the 8mm Pieper cartridge used in the Pieper revolving carbine. When a round is put in line with the barrel, it is pushed forward slightly when the hammer is cocked in order to create a gas seal. The top strap is marked "H. PIEPER BTE LIEGE." The rear cylinder face has a Liege proof, with various other Belgian proofs. Information and photographs of this exact revolver can be found online at https://littlegun.be/arme%20belge/artisans%20identifies%20p/a%20pieper%20h%20reynoso%20gb.htm in which the article states that no other examples of these revolvers are known to be in existence.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 70% original blue finish with scattered handling marks, some patches of light pitting, and mild brown freckling on the balance. Grips are very fine with a few light handling marks and defined checkering. The cylinder has modern drilled holes and added pins blocking loading of each of the chambers, otherwise the revolver functions fine.

Kynoch Schlund "Patent Model" Double Trigger DA Revolver

Lot # 3357 (Sale Order: 358 of 749)

Scarce Kynoch Schlund "Patent Model" Double Trigger Double Action Revolver

This novel revolver, based on patents by Henry Schlund, shows evidence of Tranter's influence by way of his double trigger revolver with several novel deviations: the second trigger is fully enclosed in the trigger guard and the mechanism integrates a spring loaded latch assembly allowing the revolver to be cocked in a single-action style without continued finger pressure and manually decocked if needed. Additionally, the design uses a top break mechanism with thumb-operated latch, allowing the weapon to be cleared for reloading with a single hand. George Kynoch and his associate and works manager Henry Schlund leased the arms factory of William Tranter in 1885 following the latter's retirement. This would operate as the Kynoch Gun Factory until 1889 when it was reorganized as the Aston Arms Company Ltd. Blade and notch sights, with "KYNOCH GUN FACTORY ASTON" on top of the barrel and "PATENT MODEL" on the top strap. Checkered upper trigger and smooth lower trigger with walnut grips.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 75% original blue finish, with numerous scratches and edge wear showing smooth brown and gray patina on the balance. The grip is very good with scattered mild dings and chips. Mechanically fine.

German Mauser Model 1878 "Zig-Zag" Single Action Revolver

Lot # 3358 (Sale Order: 359 of 749)

Desirable German Mauser Model 1878 "Zig-Zag" Single Action Revolver

Developed in 1878, the C78 or Model 1878 "Zig-Zag" revolver was the first handgun designed and developed by Paul Mauser and his firm. A competitor to be the first centerfire cartridge-fed handgun adopted by the German military, the 1878 scored high marks in overall performance, though concerns about the complexity of the design led them to choose the 1879 Reichs revolver instead. At the heart of the mechanism is the combination of an angular track (the titular "Zig-Zag") machined into the side of the cylinder and a toothed reciprocating bar linked to the hammer, which serves to both advance and lock the cylinder, in contrast to the more commonly seen pawl/sprocket and stop arrangement. Additionally, the spring responsible for resetting the cocking bar also powers the hammer, replacing the grip frame mounted leaf spring commonly seen in that era. For loading, the barrel assembly is hinged at the rear of the top strap, automatically pushing the hammer back to the safety notch when opened, with the closure latch doubling as the lever for a star-pattern extractor assembly. Fixed sights, with "GEBR. MAUSER & Cie OBERNDORF a/N WURTTEMBERG.1878.PATENT." on top of the barrel rib. Matching full and partial serial number on various components including the inside of the grip panels.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 70% original nickel finish with smooth brown patina on the balance, and sharp markings and edges. Grips are also fine with defined scenery, a few light handling marks and areas of light fading. Mechanically excellent.
