(A) CUSTOM ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 HEAVY BARREL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE (1892).

Lot # 2376 (Sale Order: 376 of 519)      

Model 1885 High Wall chambered in .32-40 W.C.F. manufactured by Winchester 1892. The full-length octagonal barrel is stamped "---MANUFACTURED BY THE---/ ---WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.---", with the caliber designation "32-40" present at the rear towards the breech. Either side of the receiver, as well as the muzzle and breech end of the barrel, has been wonderfully custom engraved at one time, exhibiting finely executed scroll engraving on a punch dot background. Buttplate tang bears identical scrollwork. Underside of frame is engraved with what appears to be the initials "CP" in stylized characters. Frame tang is mounted with a Lyman aperture rear sight. Barrel retains its dovetailed rear sight with graduations of 50 and 200 yards, with the blade front sight featuring a flip-up globe sight. Frame exhibits a high gloss finish, with the barrel featuring a standard blue finish. Furniture consists of a custom ebony inlaid schnabel tip forend, with a proper period wood buttstock. CONDITION: Frame retains large amounts of its reapplied blue finish, exhibiting some wear and areas of pitting beneath the finish. Barrel retains fair amounts of what appears to be its original factory blue finish, with worn areas showing through to a pleasing brown patina overall. Dark bore, exhibiting pitting and fair rifling throughout. Custom wood forend is excellent. Buttstock exhibits some minor marks from handling and storage and some minor losses around the edges of the buttplate, but otherwise is sturdy and serviceable. Included factory records indicate the serial number was applied to this rifle December 28, 1888, and it was shipped January 8, 1889. Rifle features a blued No. 3 weight half octagon barrel with Lyman globe front sight and filled-in rear sight dovetail. Tang affixed with a folding aperture rear sight. Case hardened high wall receiver with single set trigger. Ebony inlaid Schnabel tipped checkered figured walnut splinter forend. Matching figured walnut stock with checkered pistol grip, hard rubber WRACO grip cap, and brass Swiss butt plate. Stock channel numbered 2412. Matching "2412 XX" assembly number and wood grade also present on the lower tang. Factory records make no mention of the sights or Swiss butt plate, but otherwise confirm the configuration of this rifle. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel retains strong traces of original blue in protected areas, the balance faded to a mottled brown patina. Receiver has faded to characteristic silvery case hardening patina. Stocks have the usual mild marks with some added finish and a repair at the upper tang. Strong well defined rifling with some mild cleaned oxidation spots. A period 18 - 1/2" weight has been mounted to the underside of the barrel for offhand shooting. Action is case hardened with nitre blue single trigger and full loop lever. Walnut splinter forend. Moderately figured pistol grip stock and Swiss butt plate. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its factory blue, some mild wear present. Weight has largely faded to chocolate patina. Action features later engraving done in the correct style with central running buck and bison vignettes flanked by punch dot shaded foliate scrolls and lined borders. Double set triggers and a walnut knob lever. Matching numbered Schnabel tipped splinter forend with checkered offhand grip. Stock has checkering at the wrist, a double line cheekpiece, and large nickeled Swiss butt plate. CONDITION: Fine. Action flats with German nitro proofs, "BOW" and "1392.30", bottom of barrels with caliber designation, "1297g" "STL 2" and a partial steel designation, appears to have been "BOEHLER" before dovetailed forearm loop erased everything before "...HLER". Two part forearm in Mannlicher form with horn forearm cap, slightly schnabled, and sling loop. Checkered in a wave pattern about the Deely latch release. Scalloped back boxlock action with a buck on left side, and what appears to be a short horned ibex on right, accented by florals. Single Kersten lock. Double set triggers with florals on trigger guard. Walnut stock, lightly fiddled, with side panels. Pistol grip with point pattern checkering and horn pistol grip cap. Barrels with a solid flat rib, very slightly tapered, and fit with a bead front sight, serrated for anti-glare, and fit with a pop-up rear sight affixed by a dovetailed and screwed base. Claw scope mounts soldered into rib, and currently fit with Zeiss Diavari-D 1.5-6x FFP scope with German #4 reticle. Shotgun barrels have inlaid gold oak leaves and acorns connected with vines over each chamber, and "Franz Kettner / Koln - Suhl" also inlaid in gold. Relieved for sideclips, and engraved with tulip heads and "Krupp Stahl" designation; Scott's crossbolt extension. Bottom rib fit with loop for sling. Left barrel reads "PRIMA-KRUPPSCHER" and "FLUSS-STAHL" on the right barrel. Barrel flats and barrels with German proofs. Gun is chambered as a 16 bore with 2 - 1/2" chamber and 8x58mmR. Gun comes with, and is fit for, a Redfield 2 - 3/4X (1" tube) scope. The case color hardened 8-pin sidelock action with Greener styled crossbolt has fine engraved scrollwork, gold line cocking indicators, and is built with double triggers. Case colored double triggers protected by a blued flat bottom trigger guard with light floral engraving, and long tang with serial number and "PIGEON SPECIAL". Walnut stock checkered about the wrist in a point pattern inlaid with a golden oval engraved with "J.P. BRANT" and finished with a checkered butt. CONDITION: Very good as restored. Barrels with virtually all of their well executed bluing with some minor handling marks and superficial scratches, one small patch of fine oxidation on left barrel, approximately halfway down, and ghost in rib. Action excellent with virtually all of the reapplied case colors, some fine silvering at edges. Wood is very good with some handling marks and indents, heavier at butt.
