Paul Surber Indian Encampment Gouache Painting

Lot # 883 (Sale Order: 882 of 1263)

Title is On the Little Blackfoot. 8 1/2" by 15" unframed. 17 1/2" by 23 1/2" framed. Paul Surber (Born 1942) is active/lives in Montana, New Mexico. Paul Surber is known ...morefor Frontier genre, Indians and landscape painting. Paul Surber was born in Redlands CA., in 1942. His first encounter with Indians was in a Parade when he was five years old. Attracted to the colorful and ornate costumes, he went home to draw with his crayons what he had seen. Paul has been drawing and painting Indians ever since. He is known for paintings of Indians and landscapes in oil, acrylic, and gouache. He has spent much of his life living close to the source of his inspiration, the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. Surber now divides his time between Montana and Arizona. Paul has had so many great influences in his lifetime, from a childhood of roaming a museum as a young boy. Once a week his mother would drop him off with a sack lunch, which he would hide in the corner, as he spent the day wandering through the museum with admiration for the newest exhibit. Then a teacher realized that Paul, at a young age, had a learning disability and bought for him his first book on cowboys and Indians. The book instantly caught his interest and making it easier for Paul to learn to read. At a Fourth of July parade featuring Native American costumes Paul’s artistic imagination come to life. He was just five years old. Paul Surber made his way through life. As fate would have it he met an old German master artist who recognized his potential and with great discipline taught him that a good painting came from a good monochrome. He has used this method ever since. He created life long friendships in the art world, most were icons in their knowledge of Indian tribes and customs, which exposed him to original Indian artifacts. He would photograph and revisit time and time again to make sure his vision was represented as accurate as possible. At first, Paul started selling to the public his landscapes in gouache. He would travel mostly in Montana photographing locations along a river, mountain ranges or the prairies which the Indian tribes where believed to have traversed. Then he would add to the painting his vision of teepees, people, horses, drying racks and so on. He then moved to figurative paintings, first with a monochrome then finish with oil or acrylics. Paul’s greatest works are these portraits of chiefs, warriors and sometimes just the common native people. His discipline is never to paint without knowledge and deep understanding of the Native American culture.

It was at Fligelman's that Morgan received his first instruction in design, color and lettering. In 1952, Morgan was hired to design exhibits at the Montana Historical Society. With nothing more than a high school education and a stint in the Montana National Guard, Bob spent 15 years, off and on, as curator of the Montana Historical Society where he designed exhibits and was in charge of art collections and all matters pertaining to the Society's art functions. In the mid 1970's, Bob left the Historical Society to pursue a career in art.

Bed Helbig Montana Watercolor Painting

Lot # 890 (Sale Order: 889 of 1263)

Title is Flathead Ranch. 10" by 14" unframed. 15 1/2" by 19 3/4" framed. Bud Helbig (1919 - 2002) was active/lived in Montana. Bud Helbig is known for Cowboy genre, sculp...moreture. A traditional or realist painter of contemporary scenes of the American West, he was honored by election to the Cowboy Artists of America in 1972. He was born in Butte, Montana, and from 1969, lived in Kalispell. From the time he was a child, he wanted to be both a working cowboy and an artist, and the former role he assumed as a youngster growing up on a horse ranch in western Montana. There were no art schools in Montana, so he enrolled in a Federal Art School correspondence course, which increased his interest in art. He worked as a bridge builder for the Milwaukee Railroad to earn money for further study and then went to art schools in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. This schooling was interrupted by several years in the military during World War II followed by living in Chicago, where he attended the American Academy of Art. He studied there with Bill Mosby and worked as a commercial illustrator. He stayed in contact with his friends in the West through frequent return trips and finally moved back to Montana, where he became a full-time fine artist of all mediums except acrylic.

Donald "Putt" Putman was born in Spokane, Washington in 1926. Although born in Washington, he has spent most of his life in California. Putt attended high school in Los Angeles, and then joined the Navy during World War II. After the war he received a scholarship to California State University Fresno. Putt worked during the day, but drew and painted the show people and animals during the evening. His circus paintings include several portraits of the famous clown Emmett Kelley. He helped in the painting of sceneries for such movies as Mutiny on the Bounty, The Brothers Grimm and The Four Horsemen. During the 1960's, Putt returned to Art Center College as a teacher. It was there that he discovered that he truly loved to teach, and found great joy in helping others to shape their artistic skills. Over the year's Putt's passion for portraying the people and the history of the American West earned him a reputation as an accomplished Western Painter. His Western works include Native American portraits and scenes, frontier life, colonial Spanish ladies and Vaqueros, dance halls, saloons, and bordellos. While he is best known as a Westen artist, his works cover a wide range of other subjects including portraiture, dance, circus life, nudes, and landscape. In his later years Putt devoted his time fully to his painting, doing occasional shows and teaching art workshops at his home near Yosemite National Park. Putt was a member of the Yosemite Western Artists art organization based in Ahwahnee California. During the last years of his life Putt painted regularly at the historical Gertrude Schoolhouse with the YWA painting group. His paintings are in the Rochester Museum of New York, the Whitney Museum in Wyoming, and in public and private collections world-wide.

Joe Halko Montana Eagle Bronze

Lot # 901 (Sale Order: 900 of 1263)

9 3/4" by 9" by 7". Joe Halko (1940 - 2009) was active/lived in Montana. Joe Halko is known for Wildlife sculpture, dioramist, landscape painting. Joe Halko grew up a stu...moredent of nature of a ranch south of Great Falls, Montana. He learned the habits of the fox and the skunk, the crafty ways of the crows who nested in the same tree year after year, and whether the storm clouds held precious rain or dreaded hail. He built toy trucks and tractors out of leftovers from his father's shop and sculpted with clay out of the creek bank using ranch animals as models. He learned the basics of taxidermy from an uncle and so began his serious study of the anatomy of game birds and animals. Halko's first formal art education was Art Instruction, Inc. of Minneapolis, a correspondence course. After graduating from high school, he worked as a taxidermist in Great Falls and studied art at the University of Great Falls before he was drafted into the US Army. With that commitment complete, he took the train to New York to study art at the Fisk Studios and to work as a commercial artist for a Long Island advertising agency. He spent his free time there at the Museum of Natural History sketching the taxidermy mounts and the backgrounds. The school, work and big city museums were new and rewarding experiences, but the busy city was not where he wanted to be. He returned to Great Falls and earned his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry - hoping for a career with the Forest Service or the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department. Through all of this Halko had been studying painting and sculpting, and spending as much time as possible in the out of doors. As it turns out the taxidermy and the biology degree were solid preparations for Joe's career as a wildlife sculptor. His first serious sculptures were done as aids for painting - to study shadows, dimensions, and foreshortening. As he did more of these sculptures he found that he really enjoyed the sculpting, and it came easily for him. He continued his day work as a sought-after taxidermist doing sculpting on the side until 1976, when he turned to sculpting as his full-time occupation. He has been fortunate to have lived in Montana all of his life. He married Margaret also a Montana native in 1969, and they have two daughters who are now grown. There were many opportunities along the way to move to bigger cities and larger markets, to travel and participate in the so-called big time shows, but Halko wanted to live and to raise his family in the environment they all loved. They spent 17 years south of Cascade along the Missouri River where wildlife and bird life was abundant and much studied. In 1998 Joe and Margaret moved to Choteau, another beautiful spot in Montana. It is a picturesque Montana town along the east front of the Rocky Mountains with easy access to the rugged wilderness and numerous wildlife preserves.
