This is a beautiful circa 1850's big bore heavy barrel percussion Buffalo rifle from the Frontier Buffalo Hunters and captured by the Plains Indians. The large rifle exhi...morebits a massive 32 inch full octagon barrel that is 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The barrel is engraved "N.H." in script along the top and stamped, "COOPER" on the side. The side receiver is cap and ball percussion and appears to pottentially be a flintlock conversion. The wood stock has a brass trigger guard with dual setting hair trigger. There is also a brass butt plate and pewter poured fore stock end. There are two large parfleche rawhide wrappings on the stock both rawhide lacing sewn and adorned with solid brass old square shank trade tacks, all added when presumably captured, traded for or given in annuity payment to a Plains Native American Indian warrior. This large bore rifle would have been exclusively used for large game such as the Great American Buffalo Bison. Buffalo hunting became one of the largest drivers of Frontiersmen to the Plains of the west during the 1850's and by the 1880-1890's the Buffalo were nearly hunted into extension driving Native American tribes to reservations. This piece is believed to have been captured or traded for after being used by Buffalo Hunters in the West by Plains Indians, at what point they adorned it with sacred tack work and parfleche wrappings. Truly a rarity. Antique Firearm, NO FFL.

Winchester Model 1876 .45-70 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 161 (Sale Order: 21 of 45)

"Winchester 1876 early 2nd. Model .45-75 caliber sporting rifle, serial number 13144, made in 1880. The Model 1876 was Winchester’s first truly big bore repeating rifle. ...moreEssentially, it is a much larger version of their popular Model 1873 which was chambered for the “revolver length” cartridges .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20. The Model 1876 was designed for big game hunting primarily in the western part of the country where game much larger than eastern deer and black bear were commonly found. It is interesting to note that Theodore Roosevelt was a big fan of the Model 1876 and used several throughout the West that he had special ordered from Winchester. The Model 1876 was a serious specialized rifle that was made in limited quantities. It was replaced by the Model 1886 in that same year. This rifle with 28” round barrel is chambered in the powerful and popular caliber .45-75. This cartridge held a .45 caliber lead bullet weighing 350 grains in front of a full 75 grains of black powder. It was the most powerful .45 caliber offered in this model (the other being the lesser .45-60). This was a very potent cartridge that was used successfully on elk, grizzly bears and even buffalo, which were hunted in Montana as late as 1883. Most surviving 1876 rifles show very heavy frontier use and often abuse. The second model is identifiable by having the dust cover rail on top of the receiver held by screws. The final 3rd Model has this rail forged integral with the receiver top and lacks screws. This early example is in much finer condition than normally encountered today. The barrel, magazine and

Lot # 162 (Sale Order: 22 of 45)

Featured in this lot we have a Colt model 1849 pocket percussion cap revolver chambered in .31 caliber. This is a fine, original example .31 caliber, five-shot revolver t...morehat found favor with officers and enlisted men as personal weapons during the Indian Wars of the period. Many of these also saw service in the gold fields of California, the settling West, and in about all urban areas during this very turbulent time of Post-Civil War Reconstruction. The 1849 was one of Colt’s most popular designs that was large enough for aimed fire, but small enough to conceal in a waste band or unobtrusive holster. They also found favor with gamblers and “ladies of the evening.” The original barrel markings have faded and barely visible along with a faded “COLT’S PATENT” on the left side of the frame. Fine walnut grips show only normal light wear. This example also shows a mellow, uncleaned brass back strap and trigger guard. The pistol shows a dark patina and pitting across the exterior due to age and use. Serial Number: 18809. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
