SHINTO KATANA SIGNED YAMASHIRO NO KAMI FUJIWARA KUNITSUGU, WITH ATTRACTIVE NARA MOUNTS.

Lot # 3402 (Sale Order: 401 of 457)      

No papers, but likely 2nd or 3rd generation Kunitsugu, recorded in 1629-1658 and 1661, respectively, per Hawley. Fujishiro records Kunitsugu Yamashiro no Kami circa 1658,...more Musashi province, and rates him Chu-Saku. Fujishiro also notes that he was thought to be a smith who moved from Echizen to Edo. 67.3cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form, with iori mune and chu-kissaki. Jihada is ko-itame and a few spots of mokume burls, jinie, and chikei. Hamon of a largely suguha base with a few notare waves in ko nie deki with ko-ashi and inazuma visible. Bo utsuri visible. Nakago with two mekugi-ana, signed katana-mei "Yamashiro no Kami Fujiwara Kunitsugu". Two piece silver foiled habaki, bottom half with punched florals. Fuchi, kashira, and sayajiri of elegant Nara school shakudo waves with gilt dot highlights; signed on fuchi "Tsuchiya masa (?, unclear)". Tsuba is unsigned, but appears to be after Mito, with a silver rim, and depicting a dragon flowing amongst clouds, cleverly done "through" the tsuba. With an appraisal sheet attributing the sword to 2nd generation. CONDITION: Very good, in good polish throughout, with some minor handling marks and one pockmark on each side, very small. A GOOD SUE-KOTO BIZEN KATANA IN TACHI MOUNTS, SIGNED BIZEN SUKESADA AND DATED AUGUST 1571, WITH NTHK

Lot # 3403 (Sale Order: 402 of 457)      

The NPO papers decline to name a generation, and this signature was used by a number of smiths. Stout sugata with a bohi along the shinogi for approximately 35cm. Iori mu...morene, chu kissaki, and kuri jiri. Jihada is a mokume/itame mix with burls throughout, along with chikei and ji nie. Utsuri visible. Hamon is suguha with yo and some ashi visible. Nakago signed katanamei "Bizen no Kuni Ju Osasfune Sukesada Saku" and dated a day in the 8th month of Genki 2 (August, 1571). In a set of dragon themed mounts with saya decorated with a faux bark motif and mounts decorated in dragon themes in the katakiribori style. NPO does not list a maker in papers, but fuchi is signed "Genyo saku" (?), and NPO lists them as late Edo. 2 piece habaki, bottom half gilt catscratch, top incised brass. CONDITION: Blade is in polish, with some areas of shintetsu visible throughout. Some spots of ware and scratches. Mounts are very good as more recent, with some tarnishing and handling marks, but presentable. With a new made shirasaya with sayagaki identifying the blade and attributing the mounts to Yokoya school. A nice, large, sue-koto katana with papers. 75cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form, with a mixture of itame and masame, with a whisper of nagare in a few places. Chikei and jinie visible throughout. Hamon is a ...morevery gentle notare based on suguha, becoming somewhat more active at the mono-uchi. Tight, well controlled nioguchi, also opening up somewhat at the mono-uchi. Hamon with good activity, including sunagashi and kinsuji. Nakago is ha agari kurijiri with kiri yasurime and a single mekugi-ana. With a one piece habaki with gold and silver foil intended to duplicate the look of a two-piece, and a later set of fittings with a textured black saya, sayajiri in the form of fans, heavy nadekaku gata form tsuba and floral menuki. With a Japanese Art Swords LLC Record of Sword attributing the blade to Doudanuki Kouzukenosuke, better known as Dotanuki Masakuni. CONDITION: Good, in polish, with some very minor ware, but no shinae or hagire. Mounts with handling marks throughout, saya with a repaired crack along the ha side. A well presenting sword. Ubu, mumei, with a 49.5cm nagasa in classic shinogi zukuri configuration with iori mune and kuri nakagojiri. Gunome hamon with sunagashi, mokume jihada. Hakikake boshi wi...moreth a long kaeri. With NBTHK Hozon papers to Shinto Jumyo. Jumyo swords were particularly desirable as the name translates to "happy long life". Silver foil copper habaki with diagonal lines. Saya has brown lacquer and is slotted for both kogai and kozuka, which are made of copper and decorated with reeds. Fuchi, kashira, and menuki are also made of copper and decorated with reeds. Fuchi is signed "Hirata Harunari (Kao)", and there are NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers for the mounts. Kogai and kozuka both signed, looks like Tasujo Mitsumi? CONDITION: Blade is in good polish, with some spots of ware around mono-uchi. Some superficial scratching. Koshirae is very good with some handling marks, but retaining virtually all of their lacquer. Menuki with some rubbing to high edges. A good sword with a wonderful set of mounts. Single mekugi-ana, partly infilled with copper, and signed "Kaneiwa Saku". Yasurime looks like higaki, but is soft. Gold foil catscratch habaki. Koshirae is a finely textured saya with a sayajiri in the form of a sheaf of wheat and a plum tree, shakudo kurikata in the form of a clam, and kozuka depicting an eel in the water with a brass blade; kozuka signed Iwamoto Konkan. Brass tsuba carved with daruma in his cave accented in gold and silver, fuchi with a carp in copper, with gold highlights, menuki in the form of fish, and kashira with a lobster with gold highlights. With NBTHK Hozon papers for both the blade and the mounts. CONDITION: Very good, in good polish with features visible, with some scattered handling marks and ware. 66.5cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri construction, iori mune, kiri nakagojiri, and nakago with 4 mekugi-ana. Mokume hada with areas of jinie and chikei throughout, ham...moreon looks like hako-midare with deep valleys, some of which almost touch the ha, and has plenty of hataraki including sunagashi. Boshi is a notare komi. Gold foil brass habaki, made in one piece, to resemble a two piece. In a modern shirasaya, and accompanied by a Japanese Art Swords Record of Sword attributing the blade to Sengo, noting Ise province, Tenmon period, and specifically names Muramasa and Masashige. CONDITION: In good polish with visible features throughout. Monouchi with some pinprick oxidation, and there are some scattered ware and surface scratches. Extremely minor chip at hamachi, covered by habaki. Shirasaya fits well. Muramasa is a particularly famous maker, as his swords legendarily brought misfortune to the Tokugawa family, causing them to be considered wicked blades. 69cm nagasa with iori mune, and a oil tempered blade signed "Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke", with 2 mekugi-ana. Kurijiri nakagojiri, with rough katte sagari yasurime. Configur...moreation of the blade is typical shinogi zukuri oil tempering, with muji hada and a gunome hada. Gilt brass mounts, including the distinct long rooster head base of tsuka, engraved with floral vinework. Saya with a very fine, almost nashiji, lacquer, and fit with with gilt brass mounts en suite with tsuka, engraved en suite. CONDITION: Lacquer has been relacquered, and some hardware replaced on tsuka. A piece of wood has been used to fit suspension correctly. Blade is good with some mossing and marks. A MOTONAGA WAKIZASHI IN YOROI DOSHI FORM WITH TOKUBETSU HOZON PAPERS.

Dated Bunka 6 (1810), and signed "Motonaga Tsukuru Kore" (Motonaga made this), verified by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers. Highly unusual wakizashi in yoroi doshi configura...moretion, with a gigantic 12.3mm kasane. Per Sesko's Index of Japanese Swordsmiths, Motonaga was a student of the 7th generation Owari Nobutaka, Ozaki Suketaka, and Satsuma Motohira; after he completed all three trainings he changed his name to Motonaga, see pg. 407. Hira zukuri configuration with iori mune, kuri nakagojiri with kesho yasurime, and a ko-maru boshi on ura with nie-kuzuri on omote. Kaeri is very long, with muneyaki as far as 24cm down the mune. Horimono are a suken with stylized tsume on omote, and ho-bi and soe-bi on ura. One piece gold foil habaki with vertical catscratching. Jihada is largely muji, mixed with some areas of mokume with some whispers of masame, and is covered in ji nie. Hamon is nie deki midare, with a wide nioguchi. In a shirasaya. CONDITION: Excellent, in excellent polish, showing features throughout, with one very small blemish on omote kissaki and a few pinprick openings. Shirasaya very good. Stout 42cm nagasa of shinogi zukuri form with iori mune, iriyamagata nakagojiri, and single mekugi-ana, partially filled with solder. Katanamei signature for Kato Tsunahi...morede, reverse dated a day in the second month of Bunka 10 (February, 1813), and with a lengthy inscription that appears to be a poem; no papers. Kesho yasurime. Jihada is a very tight ko-itame, almost muji, with some visible strands of chikei. Hamon is a wide o-midare with nie throughout and areas of ashi, yakidashi. Ko maru boshi. Silvered copper habaki with vertical catscratch. Copper tsuba in aori gata form and decorated in katakiribori, with a tiger next to a river, reverse showing a scene of bamboo, signed "Somin (kao)"; no papers. Fuchi, unsigned, with carved river and florals in gold and silver. Menuki in the form of a mantis on ura, and florals on the omote. Horn kashira. Saya with vacant slot for kozuka or kogai, decorated in lacquer with mantises, dragonflies, and grasshopers. Horn koijiri and koiguchi. CONDITION: In good polish with some superficial scratching and some spotting o shinogiji. Habaki largely rubbed to copper. Mounts are very good, saya with some handling mark and indentations, evidence of relacquer. An interesting poetic sword. Blade Length: 42cm Overall Length: 27 - 1/4"

Hamon is a fairly restrainted mi...moredare with nie throughout, some areas rougher than others, and sunagashi, particularly at the omote hamachi. Maru boshi with kaeri fukai. Omote with triple thin line bo hi, ura with a suken horimono. Signed in two characters "Kunifusa" on omote, with NTHK NPO Kanteisho, attributing it to Chikugo Daijo Kunifusa, an Iyo province smith working in the Kanbun era circa 1661. In shirasaya with brass habaki. CONDITION: Very good, with some minor ware, mostly about the horimono. Some very fine superficial scratches visible on blade in the right like, but otherwise in excellent polish that shows features well. Shirasaya with normal age related marks. Gunome midare hamon wi...moreth conspicuous nie throughout, and sunagashi. Hakikae boshi. Jihada mixed muji and masame. Horimono are a hi on right, and goma hashi on left. One piece gold foil habaki with horizontal scratching, silver foil seppa, tsuba depicting a man (oni?) with an umbrella in a rainstorm on a beach, accented with golden bolts of lightning and aquatic motifs including what appear to be conches; signed Kaneshige. Fuchi depicts a bear with a golden robe reading a scroll, a calligrapher with a bottle of sake, and a koto player. Nicely executed on a nanako ground, signed with what looks like "Motonori", menuki in the form of oars, and polished horn kashira. Kozuka of copper, with two raised men, one chasing after a fleeing octopus, while the other holds him back. Saya of a finely textured ground,with horn sayajiri. CONDITION: In good polish with clear features. Some scattered light handling marks, and some ware near goma hashi. Mounts are very good with some handling marks, saya with long cracks down nearly the whole length of spine and belly, with some chipping at extremities. Hira zukuri form with iori mune, ubu kuri nakagojiri, and chu-maru boshi. One piece copper habaki. Wonderful themed mounts with tsuba of a rich chocolate iron base with relief spider, spiderweb, and dragonfly, accented in gold. Fuchi with a larger, more detailed and gilt dragonfly, which is repeated on kashira. Menuki of mixed metal in the form of chickens. Kozuka made of shibuchi depicting what appears to be a riverside encampment accented in gold. Saya with a finely textured ground, with smooth negative space dragonflies. Sayajiri with another nicely detailed dragonfly, en suite with fuchi and kashira. In a sword bag decorated with plum blossoms. With a Japanese Art Swords Record of Sword. CONDITION: Blade is reasonable polish, with features of hamon clearly visible, some surface scratches particularly towards bottom half of the blade, and a minor pockmark on mune. Mounts are very good with some rubbing, and patches of mossing. Saya is very good with a few abrasions at and above kurkiata. Blade Length: 28cm Overall Length: 18 - 1/2" Paperwork: JAS ROS

Tall choji hamon re...moreaches to the shinogi in some places, and is nie deki, with plenty of kinsuji and sunagashi. Some spots of tobiyaki, particularly near ha. Ko maru boshi. Nakago with katte sagari yasurime, and is signed, but patina has rendered the characters illegible. A wrap around the shirasaya attributes the work to Tachibana Yoshinari, a shinto smith in Settsu province and trained under Yoshimichi; no papers. CONDITION: Ver good, in polish, with a few very minor handling marks and some very minor pinpricks of mossing near machi. Shirasaya is very good. A wonderful blade with a plethora of activity. 71cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form with chu kissaki, ha agari kurijiri nakagojiri with single mekugi ana, ubu, katanamei signed "Kanemoto godai-me Kanenao", katte...more sagari yasurime. Per Sesko's index, only one smith signed this way, circa Kanbun, in Mino; the sugata certainly suggests Kanbun. He lived in Minos Akasaka and considered himself fifth generation Kanemoto. Tight mokume hada with some chikei, and classic Mino sanbonsugi hamon with a notare hamon with kaeri fukai. Gold foil habaki with scratch decorations. In a modern shirasaya that fits well. CONDITION: Excellent, in polish, with some very minor handling marks and a few very minor ware. Shirasaya very good. This is a very good example of a Mino sword. Blade Length: 71cm Overall Length: 40"

Suguha hamon with ashi and a gunome bump at monouchi and near hamachi on ura. Ubu, mumei, with kiri yasurime. Copper habaki with heavy crosshatching. Copper tsuba with a fierce oni on one side, and a man and his pig caught in a lightning storm, running under an umbrella; possibly of newer manufacture. Plain iron fuchi and kashira with blue tsuka ito and menuki in the form of fans. Plain black saya with iron sayajiri with inome intrusions. With a Japanese Art Swords Record of Sword attributing the sword Hizen Tadayoshi of Kansei period, which would be sixth generation. CONDITION: Blade is in good polish with some scratching and clouding towards kissaki and mossing at boshi. Mounts are good with some handling marks and rubs throughout, but solid. 50.2cm nagasa of shobu zukuru form, with iori mune and kiri nakago jiri. Boshi gets very close to yakizume but may be a very tight ko-maru. Jihada largely of masame, with...more some areas of itame and mokume, Hamon a very tight midare with areas of choji, replete with activity, including nijuba, sunagashi, and kinsuji. Mumei, with 2 mekugi-ana, one partially filled with solder; consignor tag attributes the sword to Bungo Takada, but TK papers attribute to Shikkake. Solid silver catscratch habaki, tsuba pierced with designs of kelp and waves, in maru gata ko sukashi form, mumei. Fuchi and kashira with relief florals, menuki depict a man wrestling a catfish. Saya with ribbing. CONDITION: In good polish with some areas of ware and spotting. One chip and more pitting at habaki moto. Mounts are good with some rubs. but complete and tight. WAKIZASHI IN ITO NO MAKI TACHI MOUNTS OF KO DACHI SIZE.

45cm nagasa of classic shinogi zukuri form, with iori mune and kiri nakagojiri. Mumei, and o-suriage. One area of nakago is bevelled, and it appears as though mei was rem...moreoved and the nakago was modified to fit mounts. Jihada looks like mokume hada with chikei, hamon a very tight ko-midare with kinsuji and sunagashi. Boshi is out of polish but looks like a form of maru. Shinogi-ji with bo-hi and soe-bi. Hosodachi mounts are engraved with incised takanoha and leafy vines. Menuki with takanoha. Sarute with tassel of a deep blue with gold accents. Saya of a finely executed lacquered orange ground with gold takanoha and vacant gold foil ovals. Ashi ai engraved en suite and tied with brocade en suite with tassel. CONDITION: Blade somewhat out of polish, with some spots of ware and shintetsu. Nakago shows silver at edges when fitted to koshirae. One chip to blade under habaki, with some fine pitting about the habaki. Brocade is fraying but presents well. Mounts excellent, showing little wear, with some areas throughout partially restored and parts of newer manufacture. Blade Length: 45cm Overall Length: 40 - 1/4"

A HEALTHY MUMEI KATANA WITH SILVER FOIL CATSCRATCH HABAKI.

70cm nagasa, with iori mune, shinogi zukuri form, and ha agari kurijiri nakago. Ubu, mumei, with kesho-yasuri yasurime. Fairly high shinogi line, with an extremely tight ...moreko-itame hada. Hadori polish with thick kesho that gives the impression of notare, but yakiba is much closer to a choji interpretation, poking out a bit towards the mono-uchi. Ko-maru boshi with discoloration on right side. Hamon is loaded with ginsuji strings throughout. Silver foil catscratch habaki. In a modern shirasaya that fits well. CONDITION: Blade is is healthy with some spots of surface scratches throughout, and some very fine areas of pinprick oxidation, mostly under habaki. Extreme hamachi slightly chipped. Shirasaya is very good. Blade Length: 70cm Overall Length: 39 - 1/2"

Late Meiji, 19th century. Aikuchi mounts with brass fittings engraved with florals on a bunch dot background, while the says is cloissone, depicting multicolor florals on...more a robin's egg blue background. Ubu, mumei tanto is out of polish with features obscured, but there is what appears to be a line of kinsuji along the left side, and it is of traditional make. CONDITION: Cloisone is very good with some hairline cracks and some minor handling marks. Tanto is out of polish as mentioned, with some light mossing and handling marks. Blade Length: 21cm Overall Length: 13 - 1/2"

70.1cm nagasa, classic shinogi zukuri form with kuri nakagojiri and iori mune. Ko kissaki with ko maru boshi, a very tight itame/mokume jihada, almost konuka, with some c...morehikei and a hint of masame towards ha. Hamon a well executed suguha, with some spots of ashi, sunagashi, and some gunome bumps at monouchi. Katanamei signed "Minamoto Moritoshi". In a set of mounts with Inro-Kizami saya with vacant slot for kozuka, mumei tsuba pierced with floral designs, and fuchi and kashira depicting nature scenes with a bird and the moon over a cloudy, menuki in the form of horses. CONDITION: In good polish showing features throughout. Some spots of ware, most noticeable at the shinogi-ji on omote, and a circular ware on the ura. An attractive sword. WAKIZASHI, SIGNED, IN ELEGANT KOSHIRAE.

40cm nagasa in shinogi zukuri form with iori mune, and kuri nakagojiri. Jihada is a mokume/itame mix with chikei. Tight gunome hamon with sunagashi and a midare-komi bosh...morei, in nie-deki. Nakago is signed "KANE ? (character unclear)". Habaki with catscratch on bottom half, smooth on the top. Koshirae consists of a tightly ribbed saya with gilt copper mounts, including kurikata, sayajiri, fuchi, and kashira, which are in the form of waves. Gold foil seppa. Menuki in the form of horses. Accoutrements include a pair of wari-kogai with a family mon, tipped in silver, and a kozuka with insects. CONDITION: In good polish with features visible. Some minor pinprick spotting and some superficial scratches. Seppa are peeling, tsuba is rubbing to edges. Saya is good with a crack on the ha side, but presents well. Blade Length: 40cm Overall Length: 21 - 1/2"

AN ATTRACTIVE O-TANTO IN GOOD KOSHIRAE WITH DRAGON THEME.

25.4cm nagasa of hira zukuri form with iori mune, with kuri nakagojiri, ubu, mumei. Jihada is mokume mixed with some masame, especially towards mune, with areas of chikei...more. Gunome hamon with a ko-maru boshi. Later cast tsuba depicts clouds with a dragon interwoven. Fuchi with a carved dragon amongst clouds, accented with gold, later menuki with a dragon motif. Polished horn kashira. Kozuka depicts a dragon, executed in katakiribori, with golden eyes, signed on rear; no papers. Saya with a finely textured ground, and koguchi depicting a dragon amongst clouds with an inome intrusion. CONDITION: Very good, in polish, with some minor handling marks and superficial scratches to blade, and some very minor scattered ware. Mounts are good with some expected rubbing and evidence of age. Kozuka very good. Saya with chipping throughout and a crack across ha side. A well presenting set with an interesting kozuka. Blade Length: 25.4cm Overall Length: 19"

A CHOSHU SHINSHINTO KO-KATANA SIZED FOR A BOY, SIGNED BY ISHIDO MASAHIRA.

50.7cm nagasa, proportionally sized for a boy or young man, with shinogi zukuri form, ubu but remounted at least once as hole is closer to an "8" than one mekugi-ana, kat...moreanamei signed "Choshu Ishido Masahira Saku", ura dated 3rd month of the 10th year of Tempo. Ha agari kurijiri nakagojiri. Proportional chu-kissaki, with chu-maru boshi. Hamon is a gentle notare midare with sunagashi and ashi, jihada with mokume and masame, with chikei and jinie. Silver foil catscratch habaki. Tsuba in mokko gata form, decorated with incised florals, highlighted with gilt on underside, and fit with a shakudo rim. Fuchi and kashira with stylized incised waves with gold dots, menuki with samurai fighting on horseback, one drawing back his bow and the other charging. Saya with an orange and brown nashiji lacquer, semegane and kojiri en suite with fuchi and kashira. CONDITION: Blade is in good polish with some very minor handling marks, mostly in shinogi-ji, with features clearly defined throughout.Mounts are good with some age related staining and rubs. Saya with some chips and handling marks throughout, and repaired along mune side in two sections. A well presenting sword. Blade Length: 50.7cm Overall Length: 30 - 1/2"
