ATTRACTIVE AND MONUMENTAL WWII ERA REGISTRAR FOR THE NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Lot # 3127 (Sale Order: 127 of 457)

An immense painted registrar of ships built at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The painting features a list of ships which were constructed at the Norfolk Naval yard beginnin...moreg with the first vessel, the Chesapeake Frigate in 1799 and ending with the Agile-class minesweeper Bulwark in 1953. The registrar is built of wood and is beautifully painted with a commanding spread-winged eagle perched on a fasces with Norfolk Naval Shipyard banner draped in front. Beneath the eagle is a flotilla with ships crafted by the staff at the shipyard. The rest of the painting is a long list of ships that were produced at the shipyard with names, classifications, and dates. The list is flanked by more ships with short descriptions of the vessels. Some of the noteworthy vessels are the Merrimac, USS Texas, USS Langley, USS Downes, and USS Alabama. The registrar was most likely assembled circa 1940s-1950s and was probably displayed in a reception hall to showcase the achievements of the facility. Assembled of wood boards that measure approximately 11 - 1/2" each, the overall measurement is approximately 96" x 53" x 4" including what appears to be the original frame. The colors remains vibrant with very little blemishes which do not detract from the splendor of the piece. Frame exhibits scattered scuffs and handling/storage wear but each blemish adds a pleasing amount of character to the overall appearance. Lines where the boards connect are visible in some areas. An excellent and ornate shipyard registrar that demands attention and would certainly be the centerpiece of a naval collection.

ARCHIVE OF MAPS FROM GENERAL GEORGE PATTON'S AIDE, COL. BRATTON.

Lot # 3128 (Sale Order: 128 of 457)

Superb collection of World War II maps and ephemera from General George Patton’s Third Army campaigns in France, from the personal collection of the Third Army’s Headquarters Commandant, Colonel Rufus Bratton, who was awarded the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. Both citations with embossed official copies of his awards are included. Colonel Bratton was an Army infantry and intelligence officer whose work and actions during the Pearl Harbor attack were fictionalized in the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! In 1943, the Army transferred Bratton to the position of Headquarters Commandant for General Patton’s Third Army which kept him in close contact with Patton during the Third Army’s rapid advance through France to their post-war occupation of Germany. Bratton organized operations from the shores of France to Berlin, and was awarded a Bronze Star and a Legion of Merit for his meritorious service. The Bronze Star citation reads, in part, “For meritorious service… This officer, serving as Headquarters Commandant, Headquarters Third United States Army, had the difficult task of planning and executing the frequent movements of the Army Headquarters during its rapid progress across France… This outstanding performance of duty merits the highest praise.” The color photograph depicts Bratton and another officer in the Headquarters’ Tactical Operations Center; the black-and-white photograph is of Bratton conducting a maneuvers briefing. Michelin map and silk map are folded and exhibit creases. The Michelin map exhibits markings in blue ink that track Patton's route which were most likely penned by Bratton. The ephemera is well preserved and exhibits typical blemishes from storage. This collection was sold at Bauman Rare Books. CONDITION: Good. Paperwork: Previous Descriptions...more
