BRITISH HANGMAN’S ROPE: EX-LATTIMER.

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 1 of 457)

Dr. John K. Lattimer’s wide-ranging interest in history and historical figures led him into the study of assassinations, both Lincoln’s and Kennedy’s, the attack on William Seward, etc., the perpetrators, and even forensic pathology in studying the crimes. He also developed an interest in the punishments, having witnessed the Nuremburg trials and subsequent executions. He later acquired this British hangman’s rope by way of British master gunsmith Kit Ravenshear (1930-1998) along with a 1974 letter to Ravenshear regarding its history. The rope is thick, heavyweight, with leather wrap on the heavy brass grommet forming the knot and the portion the part of the rope that would be in contact with the neck, a hard rubber stop for the knot, and another heavy brass grommet for attachment to a hook. Also with this is a 1979 letter from Lattimer seeking information and technical details for ropes he had seen used in the executions at Nuremburg. CONDITION: Good. Paperwork: Lattimer Correspondence...more

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 2 of 457)

Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian nationalist and spiritual leader who lived from 1869-1948. Considered the father of his country, Gandhi's philosophy of passive resistanc...moree and non-violence set the stage for the British withdrawal from India, resulting in the country's independence. This artifact is most important and comes in the form of tortoise-shell eyeglasses with circular lenses and straight arms, contained in a period case. The glasses were owned by Gandhi and given to his friend and political associate U Maung Maung Ji (1900-1973), Burmese Diplomat, member of the Anti-Separation League, and a member, with Gandhi and Nehru, of the All India Congress Committee. These glasses were auctioned at Alexander Autographs Inc. and purchased by Dr. John K. Lattimer. Reference to these glasses was made in a letter from producer Richard Attenborough to Maung Ji's widow in 1981, and the dossier and glasses were originally obtained from Maung-Ji's estate. The glasses were also sold with several letters from Jawaharlal Nehru, U Thant, and Richard Attenborough as well as photographs and related documents which were separated from the glasses before their consignment to Morphy Auctions. The glasses are accompanied by their original auction description and a letter addressed to Dr. Lattimer regarding the sale. The glasses remain intact with a nice patina. Case exhibits handling wear. MARY TODD LINCOLN COIFFURE COMB: EX-LATTIMER.

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 6 of 457)

This coiffure or hair-setting comb comes from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection, where it was among his renowned collection of Lincoln memorabilia. His display card, with this piece, refers to “TORTOISE SHELL COMBS FOR HER COIFFURE,” indicating this was likely with the two dark brown and tan combs sold in the November 2008 sale of some of his Lincoln material. Those combs were noted as listed in the Kunhardt inventory and likely descended through Mary Edwards Brown, great-niece of Mary Todd Lincoln. This comb is in the form of a walking bird, 3 x 6", bone, with brown detailing, missing just two or three teeth. After his death, Dr. Lattimer’s collections were in some disarray, with pieces purchased or displayed together, and their supporting documentation, sometimes separated. Many of these are only now surfacing. CONDITION: Good....more

LAFAYETTE ATTRIBUTED EMBROIDERED SILK SLEEVED VEST OR WAISTCOAT.

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 7 of 457)

Sleeved vest or waistcoat of white silk, collarless, turned over lapels, with 9-button front purportedly owned by Lafayette and left at the household of Gouverneur Morris...more, statesman, author of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution and signatory. Hand embroidered front panels with floral motifs in various shades of green and pink. All 9 embroidered cloth covered lapel buttons in place with good buttonholes. Cuffs fastened with 3 plain white silk covered buttons each. 1 shallow exterior pocket at lower front on either side. Belt adjusted at rear by small brass 2-prong buckle marked "A. D. & C." on frame bar reverse. CONDITION: Good. Staining to the interior, wear to the upper shoulders, upper back, and left armpit. Some losses to the narrow green borders edging the lapel and pockets. The floral motifs generally very good with good color. Paperwork includes letter of provenance indicating the vest was purchased by Pennsylvania and Maryland antique dealer Dora Mae Kane at a Morris family estate sale, passed to collector Viola Winchester, and thence to the Horse Soldier of Gettysburg prior to February 1986. Ms. Winchester indicated Lafayette had left behind a trunk with Gouverneur Morris. A New Yorker by birth, Morris had was a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1778 and lived in Philadelphia from 1779, serving as assistant superintendent of finance of the United States and as a Pennsylvania delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Meetings between the 2 men in America are thus possible until Lafayette's departure for France from Boston in December 1781 or during his return visit of 1784-85. The 2 men also met during Morris's time in France, but Morris died in 1816, before Lafayette's 1824 tour of the U.S. Ms. Winchester related a story that the two men had quarreled over Anna Lee (Anne Hill Carter,) future mother of Robert E. Lee, a likely apocryphal story since she was born in 1773.

CIVIL WAR M1850 PRESENTATION SWORD OF CAPTAIN ROBERT M. HANSON, 95TH OHIO VOLUNTEERS.

Lot # 3022 (Sale Order: 22 of 457)

A nice example of a US Civil War M1850 Foot Officer's sword marked "W. CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN" around the firm's knight logo on the ricasso. The blade is plain, with the exception of the letters "U.S." and a federal eagle on either side of the blade. Scattered blemishes throughout with a gray patina. Hilt with open scroll guard that features flowers and other foliate motifs with a thin knucklebow that connects to a tiered pommel with laurel leaves. Wood grip is leather wrapped with twisted wire in its grooves. Hilt with nice amounts of original gilding and patina. Grip with areas of leather loss and tight wire. Complete with its leather scabbard that features gilded brass mounts. A leather hanger is present. Areas of creases and cracks, with 1 significant area between the mounts. Scattered dents on mounts. Break at drag. The sword features a presentation on the upper mount that reads “Capt R. M. Hanson / 95th Regt. O.V. / USA / July 1862.” Hanson was born in 1836, enlisted in Company B of the 95th Ohio from Madison County July 24th, 1862, and received his commission in August. The regiment saw active service, losing 1 officer and 58 men killed or mortally wounded. It was unfortunate in being caught up in two defeats: the first at Richmond, Kentucky, in late August 1862, soon after organizing, where it lost 8 killed, 47 wounded, and almost all the regiment, some 600, captured. They were exchanged in November, reorganized for six months and then took an active part in the Vicksburg Campaign, followed by the advance on Jackson, and then moved with Sherman to Chattanooga, fighting at Missionary Ridge. In June 1864, they met their second mishap in Sturgis’s effort to keep Forrest busy during the Atlanta Campaign and were roundly defeated at Brice’s Crossroads, with Hanson wounded on the skirmish line and briefly captured. The regiment went on to fight Forrest more successfully at Tupelo, then move against Price in Arkansas and Missouri before reaching Nashville in time to take part in the battle there in December and then in the pursuit of Hood. They later took part in the capture of Mobile before moving on to Montgomery. Hanson was discharged June 29th, 1865. He seems to have applied for an invalid pension in 1868 and died in 1874, possibly from the effects of his war wound- the official report of Brice’s Crossroads indicates he had been seriously wounded. This sword is fresh to market and not been previously offered. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 31" Overall Length: 37 - 1/2" Paperwork: Research...more

US CIVIL WAR M1850 OFFICER SWORD AND GROUPING OF HENRY CLAY CONNER, FOUGHT AT DEVIL'S DEN.

Lot # 3024 (Sale Order: 24 of 457)

A nice offering of items from Captain Henry Clay Connor. The group consists of his M1850 officer's sword with a blade that exhibits a pleasing gray patina that slightly mutes the patriotic and foliate motifs on each side. No visible maker marking. Hilt is in standard configuration with brass guard and knucklebow with tiered pommel. Grip is of wood, wrapped with leather and grooved in order to accommodate strands of twisted brass wire. Leather loss to grip with tight wire. Scabbard is present, but is fragmented, missing a portion of leather between the middle mount and drag, with significant bends that are almost breaks in between the mounts. The mounts exhibit a dull patina. The rest of the group consists of Conner's captain's shoulder boards, Massachusetts Minute Men 1861 medal, a piece of wood with label stating that it came from Libby Prison, and a binder of ephemera that mostly includes post-war pension and veteran related documents from the early 1900s. There are a few envelopes and letters that date to the Civil War. The ephemera exhibits wear that is typical of old paper. Conner was born in Boston in 1833, married in 1853, and working as a “heeler” in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1861 when he enlisted first at age 28, mustering into Co. D 8th Mass. Infantry as corporal on 4/30/61. The regiment served at Annapolis, Washington, Relay House, and Baltimore, mustering out 8/1/61. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant of Co. A 22nd Mass. Infantry on 9/2/61, which likely dates this sword, making 1st lieutenant 2/17/1862, and captain 8/12/62. In the Peninsula Campaign the regiment fought at Yorktown and suffered heavily at Gaines Mill, losing 84 just in killed and mortally wounded, and another 11 at Malvern Hill. It was heavily engaged again at Fredericksburg and at Gettysburg, where it lost 3 killed, 27 wounded, and 1 missing out just 137 engaged in the fighting near Devil’s Den and then took part in the campaign to the Rappahannock. Conner was discharged for disability 11/14/63, but enlisted yet again, as Captain Co. B 4th Mass. Heavy Artillery, which served in the defenses of Washington, mustering out 6/17/65. His service record in the 22nd shows him present through August 1862, sick in September, present October through December, and on recruiting duty January to April 1863. He was present May and June, sick again at some point in July, returning to the regiment Aug. 29, but absent sick again from Oct. 18 to his discharge in November. We find him after the war, briefly working as a police constable in Essex County, Massachusetts, and by 1880 in Elmira, New York, working as a “traveling agent.” He died at a disabled veterans’ home in Tennessee in 1916. CONDITION: Fair-good. Blade Length: 30" Overall Length: 36"...more

The sword is quite eye catching and features a slightly curved blade that is decorated for half its length with beautifully etched and frosted panels that depict patriotic and naval motifs. The obverse ricasso is marked "SCHUYLER HARTLEY / & GRAHAM / NEW YORK" and the reverse ricasso is marked "IRON PROOF" with "W / CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN" surrounding the firm's knight logo. We find him on the USS Vicksburg in 1865. The ship was a converted steamship commissioned in New York in late 1863 and ordered to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron in February 1864. It captured a blockade runner in April, chased several others and operated off the Cape Fear River, taking part in capture of the steel-hulled blockade runner Bat in October, and took part in both attacks on Fort Fisher. In March 1865 the ship was operating around White House, Virginia, and the York River in support of Grant. Bennett served in the Navy for almost 7 years, being honorably discharged 2/24/1869. He was later a member of the Sullivan County, NY, Med. Assn.; Am. Med. Assn.; fellow N. Y. State Med. Assn.; and member of the Examination Committee, 1886-8.
