W.B. Ten Eyck Montana Saddle Maker Cane

Lot # 582 (Sale Order: 582 of 1263)

Phenomenal Historic Montana Saddle Maker Cane. 35" long. W.B. "Billy" Ten Eyck was born April 30th, 1858 in Lumber City, Pennsylvania. As a young man, Ten Eyck came to Ch...moreeyenne, Wyoming where he learned the saddlery and harness-making trade. He then found work in a saddle and tack shop in Miles City, Montana. Ten Eyck came to Billings in 1886 and established his first saddlery on the South Side. William gained a notable reputation for his craftsmanship, and moved his saddlery to Montana Avenue, between North 26th and 27th Streets. At its peak, Ten Eyck’s saddlery employed 15 men and sold all manners of saddles and tack including team harnesses, buggy harnesses, 30 different styles of saddles, and stockman goods of all kinds. William gained many friends and acquaintances through his business, including many Crow Indians. Ten Eyck was a fluent speaker of the Crow language, and many Crow people sought out and gathered around his shop when visiting Billings. The Crow called William “Broken Face,” due to the deep furrow lines in his face. Due to the growing popularity of motor vehicles, Ten Eyck saw a sharp decline in his business in the 1910s and 20s. Following the death of his wife, and despondent over his ailing health and financial troubles, William took his own life on August 25th, 1929. Ten Eyck was a charter member of the Maverick Hose Company, a volunteer fire department in Billings. During his funeral, members of the MHC served as his pallbearers, and a fire engine carried his body to his final resting place at Mountview Cemetery.

Edwin Willard Deming Bear and Boy Bronze

Lot # 590 (Sale Order: 590 of 1263)

Title is Young Boy and a Bear. Fenn Bronze Foundry. 5 1/2" by 4" by 3 1/2" Edwin Willard Deming (1860 - 1942) was active/lived in Connecticut, New York, Ohio. Edwin Demin...moreg is known for Indian, western genre and animal painting, camouflage artist, panorama. Born in Ashland, Ohio, Edwin Deming was an early illustrator and painter of the American West where he traveled among several Indian tribes. He had grown up with Sac, Fox, and Winnebago playmates in western Illinois and later lived among Indians for thirty-one years. He was committed to depicting the unspoiled Indian, a mission he perceived as trying to make amends for corrupting their culture. It was said that "No painter knew more about the American Indian--his life, culture, and religion" (Harmsen Western Art). When he was a teenager, he traveled West by train and stagecoach to sketch the Indian territory, but his parents, intent on "practical" pursuits, sent him to Chicago to study business law. However, he determined to be an artist, so he sold all his possessions to earn money and enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City. He also studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris for a year with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. From 1885 to 1887, he painted cycloramas and then made his first trip West in 1887. In 1893, he and artist DeCost Smith traveled West for Outing magazine to write about and illustrate life among the Sioux and Crow Indians. Frederic Remington joined them on part of that illustration assignment. Subsequently Deming spent three decades living with Indians including the Apache and Pueblo Indians in the Southwest and the Umatillas in Oregon. He made occasional trips to New York where he married artist Therese Osterheld, and they raised six children in the West. The Blackfeet Indians adopted the entire family and gave him the name of "Eight Bears." When the family returned to New York City, the family's home and studio in Greenwich Village was called "The Lodge of the Eight Bears." He teamed with his artist-wife to write and illustrate a series of children's books, and he illustrated another children's book by his daughter, Alden. During World War I, he was in the camouflage department at Camp Benning, Georgia, and he died in New York City in 1942. Indeed his career indicated that he had followed the advice of Teddy Roosevelt "to paint Indians, as you know them". . .

4" by 3 1/2" by 3". HARVEY RATTEY – is a Native American enrolled tribal member of the Little Shell Band of the Chippewa. He and his three sisters and a brother were rais...moreed on a cattle ranch bordering the Assiniboine reservation near Harlem, MT. During the past 35 years, his love of the cowboy and of wildlife has inspired him to sculpt both subjects with "wild and wooly" action and empathy. However, his greatest interest lies in portraying the Indian people he has known and their way of life spanning the time of the last nomadic Indians to contemporary Indian people in the mainstream of modern society. Harvey has chosen to portray his ancestors and the people he knows in a representational art form foregoing the growing trend toward abstraction. Harvey has chosen to portray his ancestors and the people he knows in a representational art form foregoing the growing trend toward abstraction. "The images of my people," he says with conviction "are clear and realistic mental scenes. I feel it’s important to depict these images authentically in my work. My sculptures capture the essence of moments from history for viewers to enjoy and ponder." He resides in Glendive, MT with his wife Pamela Harr, also a sculptor, and their 6 children.

Becky Eiker Once Upon a Time Bronze

Lot # 592 (Sale Order: 592 of 1263)

6 1/4" by 4 1/2" by 3 1/2". Title is Once Upon a Time. Becky Eiker (Born 1942) was active/lived in Montana, North Dakota. Becky Eiker is known for Sculptor-figures of wom...moreen and children. Born in 1942 in Valley City, North Dakota, Becky Eiker began her career as an art teacher, and then evolved into a potter and then made the natural transition into sculpture. Her interest in the human figure stems from a group of Helena, Montana artists who met and shared model expenses. Because the poses of models are limited and rather static, Becky began to draw from her imagination to get more action and feeling into her figures. Becky's sculpture has received numerous awards in juried competition. Because of her ability to work spontaneously in clay, she also participates in many "Qucik Draw" events. In 1999, Becky presented the City of Helena with her first life-size bronze of a newsboy entitled "Extra! Extra!" as a thank you for the community's support of her career. Becky and her husband reside in Helena, Montana.

Ace Powell Hangin On Montana Cowboy Bronze

Lot # 593 (Sale Order: 593 of 1263)

7 1/4" by 6 7/8" by 3 3/8". Title is Hangin On. Ace (Asa Lynn) Powell (1912 - 1978) was active/lived in Montana, New Mexico. Ace Powell is known for Cowboy genre and Indi...morean figure painting. Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, Ace Powell became a painter of western action scenes, wild animals, and Indian figures in realistic style and in the tradition of Charles Russell. Powell's trademark signature on his paintings is the ace of diamonds, which also became his nickname. He was prolific, creating between 12,000 and 15,000 paintings and sculptures. He considered oil to be his best medium although he loved sculpting in terra cotta, stone, and wood. He also was skilled at etching. His life has involved many changes of location and personal circumstance, much of it due to his alcoholism, which he eventually overcame. Eventually he settled in Kalispell. He moved to Montana at age one month. His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father was a cowboy foreman on the Ben Steven's horse ranch, then a homesteader, and eventually a worker for the Glacier National Park Service. Charlie Russell' s summer home was near the Powell home, and the Russells were family friends and encouraged Asa, nicknamed "Ace" in his artistic talent. He loved the Blackfeet Indians so much his father sent him to school on their reservation, and these people became one of his most frequent subjects. He also worked on the Bar X Six Ranch where he was a saddle-horse guide for many visiting successful western artists. He built a studio in Choteau, Montana and from there worked as a wood animal sculptor and also did book illustrations. After his first wife died when he was 29, he was briefly in the Army, worked in a defense plant, and was in the plastic figurine business in Yakima, Washington, but his partner ran off with his second wife, obviously terminating their business arrangement. He returned to Glacier Park for six years with his young son and then at age 40 enrolled in the University of Montana on the G.I. Bill. But he disliked the abstract art being promoted, so he quit and took the Famous Artists correspondence course, which really helped him down the path that established his art career. In 1952, he married artist Nancy McLaughlin, and in Hungry Horse, Montana they successfully operated a gallery, but it burned to the ground in 1964. They divorced, and in 1965, he married Thelma Conner.

Gordon Monroe Best Friends Bronze Montana

Lot # 595 (Sale Order: 595 of 1263)

16 3/4" by 14 1/2" by 8 1/8". Title is Best Friends. Gordon Monroe (Born 1946) is active/lives in Montana. Gordon Monroe is known for Sculpture. Gordon Monroe, an enrolle...mored member of the Blackfeet Tribe, was born in 1946 in Browning, Montana, on the Blackfeet Reservation. Gordon graduated from the Browning Public School System, and earned a 2-year business degree from Blackfeet Community College. In addition to a 40 year career as a professional artist, Gordon serves on the Blackfeet Honorary Advisory Council researching topics such as water, land, and land recovery efforts for the Blackfeet Tribe. In his early career, Gordon held various jobs in the area before he began work at the Big Horn Art Foundry in Browning in 1968. The foundry was owned and operated by Robert Scriver, a nationally known western sculptor. Because of its location and distance from urban centers, the foundry employed many Blackfeet tribal members. Working under Scriver's supervision, Gordon was offered the unique opportunity to learn the entire spectrum of lost wax casting, from the creation of the clay model to the pouring of the finished bronze. As his knowledge and expertise in its techniques grew, so did his interest in the art form. This led Gordon to begin working in clay at home. As Gordon became a more confident sculptor, he began using his acquired skills to cast and exhibit his artwork. He works with water clay to produce ceramic sculptures, oil clay to produce bronze sculptures, and fiberglass for much larger pieces. The inspiration he draws from historical sources and discussions with elders influence the style of his sculpture. In 1973, Gordon Monroe's sculpture was featured in his first solo exhibition at the Museum of the Plains Indian. Over the next several decades, his work received national acclaim and has been featured in exhibitions at: the C.M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana; Native American Museum of Art, Spokane, Washington, the Montana Historical Society, Helena, Montana, and the Heard Museum, Phoenix Arizona.

Jack JP Kelley Montana Prostitute Bronze

Lot # 597 (Sale Order: 597 of 1263)

Title is La Courtesan. 10 1/2" by 9 3/4" by 7 5/8". Jack Kelley (1927 - 2005) was active/lived in Montana, Arizona. Jack Kelley is known for Sculpture, painting. John Phi...morellip "J.P." Kelley was born March 3, 1927, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was the son of a range boss and cowboy, John Constantine Kelley, who was born and raised in rugged New Mexico. As a young man, J.P. worked as a cowpuncher on the Apache reservation in Arizona alongside his dad in the 1940's and 1950's. During that era, he went by the nickname Jack Kelley. In his own words, he recalled, "I was raised on a horse, staring cattle in the rump. I rode and worked on more mean horses than the average modern-day cowhand ever saw. J.P. Kelley’s firsthand experience as a true cowboy influenced and informed his artwork. Kelley indicated "his first award in the art field came at about age 9 [thus circa 1936] when he entered a painting of two horses fighting in the county fair at Cibecue, Arizona. The painting, done on a piece of discarded cardboard, took first place and launched Kelley’s art career. He also drew on his knowledge of cowboy life when writing more than a dozen poems under his pen name "Jack Kelley and a multitude of fabulous Western pen-and-ink sketches and cartoons. A 1973 article about "J.P. Kelley (the nickname he used for the next two decades) in the Western Horseman magazine said he "didn’t settle strictly into an art career until 1968. I would sketch, paint, or sculpt, and often sold my work for fair prices, but this was only on a hobby basis. After J.P. moved to the Flathead Valley in Montana around 1969, his art career flourished. During the 1970's and 1980's, he specialized in Western bronze sculptures, cast at the renowned Ace Powell Foundry in Kalispell and elsewhere. Altogether, J.P. created no fewer than 200 sculptures of various sizes and media, many with tremendous detail and historic accuracy, right down to how the cowboy held his reins or the anatomical correctness of the figures. J.P.’s bronze sculptures were exhibited around the West as well as on a national tour in 1973 that included the world-famous Kennedy Gallery, New York; Newman Galleries, Philadelphia; the Wally F. Findlay Galleries in Chicago; and Willoughby-Toschi Art Gallery in San Francisco. In 1980, Kelley took his art to Europe in conjunction with a promotion of Western products sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He also won numerous Best of Show awards and earned his place among a host of talented regional peers, such as Bob Scriver, Ace Powell, Tom Saubert, Elmer Sprunger, Fred Fellows, Tom Sanders, and many other well-known artists. By 1990, J.P. had moved to rural Oregon and showed his bronze sculptures only occasionally thereafter. During retirement, he turned his attention to compiling and publishing a couple collections of his pen-and ink sketch cartoons. The first, Whang Leather, captures cowboy life on the range, while his second, I Saw It at the Mall, is a contemporary and humorous look at American culture. He also published a collection of his early working sketches and notes in a book titled A Trash Bin Interception. All three titles are out of print. J.P. spent his final few years in Sturgis, South Dakota, where he died January 28, 2005, just shy of his 78th birthday. Fortunately for the public, some of his bronze sculptures are still being sold and shown in secondary markets, but the majority of them remain in beloved private collections.
