1841 "MISSISSIPPI" RIFLE & BAYONET. Cal. 54, NSN. Standard configuration of Remington contract model 1841 rifle, 33" barrel. This is a very interesting gun in which there are at least three or four other documented specimens with the Confederate C&R "Q" marking from Richmond Armory. Rifle is a State of New York 1861 Frederick Grosz alteration of turning down barrels for angular bayonet attachment, about 1600 alterations were made. New York Civil War regiments were issued these rifles, the 7th, 10th, & 12th New York Volunteer Infantry are known recipients. An unknown quantity were captured in Grant's Overland Campaign by Confederates and taken to Virginia Armories for "Cleaning & Repair". Many guns such as this one appear original and matching with only cleaning, as noted by the light lock markings caused by removing rust by buffing. The "C&R" Cleaning & Repair departments of the armories bought emery and crocus powder in large quantities for cleaning & polishing metal as many guns were found on the field rusted. The C&R "Q" is stamped forward of trigger guard in stock and is the most common encountered C&R inspection mark. CONDITION: very good overall, all original and matching, rear sight is a correct replacement. Lock markings discernible including 3-line Remington makers mark, and "U.S. / 1850" on tail. Barrel tang has clear matching date "1850" and clear proofs"U.S. / A.D.K. / P" at the breech and "STEEL" on the left flat is weak with vise mark showing that breech plug was removed in C&R process to clean bore which has bright crisp original 7 land & groove rifling. Brass furniture cleaned & polished, toned to light patina. Barrel & lock are smooth grey metal. Stock is sound with old varnish, two inspector cartouches visible in outline and a number "69" stamped opposite lock. Mechanics are crisp. Accompanying bayonet has US surcharge, fits well, with comparable smooth iron patina. PROVENANCE: Dr. Fred Novy, ASAC. (01-25308/JS). $2,500-3,000.
