Lot of Two (2) Revolutionary Hangers/Swords, One with Scabbard:  1) Ca.1770-1790, 28.5" curved blade with a single wide fuller running the full length to the tip. No visible maker's marks. Brass "D" guard with straight quillion having a rounded tip. Smooth backstrap with flat top and capstan rivet/peened tang. Swelled ebony grip with vertical grooves running from top to bottom. There are large engraved letters on top of the quillion flat that read "V"/W*L". There is no scabbard present. OAL is 33.5". Condition is good, the blade showing heavy rust staining, a few edge and spine nicks, some old cleaning, but remains quite sharp. Bottom of the guard shows fairly recent file and sanding marks, possibly from some straightening and minor repair. Brass fittings show age, wear, minor dings, and scratches. There are remnants of older patina in protected areas. Grip has several chips at the top and bottom and a large crack on one side. Hilt is fairly tight to the blade with a slight gap at the grip ferrule. 2) With Original Brass-Mounted Leather Scabbard, ca. 1750-1770. The 26.25" blade has a single small fuller at the top that runs about 3/4s the length of the blade. No visible maker's markings. Blade shows some faint remnants of engraved decorations, mainly on one side; thin brass "D" shaped finger guard, with a flat base, and down-turned quillion with rounded tip. Brass ferrule and backstrap with flat pommel top and capstan rivet. Line border engraving on the ferrule and pommel, with a faceted pattern on the backstrap and rear of pommel. Beautiful spiral wood grip with original thin leather covering, and flat silver wire wrapping in the spiral grooves. Scabbard brass fittings have decorative edges that all match. Top fitting has a frog stud for the shoulder harness. Condition is good, the blade showing a somewhat cleaned surface with pitting, age graying, numerous dark rust spots, and a couple of small edge nicks. The brass of the hilt has a fairly dark patina, with nice shape to all the parts, a couple of old repair spots, and is still nice and tight to the blade. Grip is very nice, showing some wear and losses to the leather covering mainly near the top, with a few scuffs and scrapes on the remainder of the grip. Flat silver wire is in very good shape with a nice dark patina. Scabbard leather shows heavy age, torn seams, tears, and a small loss at the top edge near the middle, but the fact that it is there at all is remarkable. Brass scabbard fittings show age, wear, dings, dents, and the frog stud has some movement. Overall a nice example. Est.: $600-$900/Lot.
