Japanese Samurai Sword, with old unsigned blade, additions showing civilian service to the military in WWII. No scabbard. The 26.5" shinogi-zukuri shaped blade has a dragon horimono carved into one side, probably been added at a later date than when the blade was made; the other side features a short groove partially filled with red paint. No visible temper line due to blade condition. The tang is unsigned and heavily rusted, with four mounting holes. Old iron tsuba guard with brass depiction of water or stream and plants. There are two copper seppa spacers and a leather spacer that probably once had a tab with a snap for the scabbard which is missing. Copper fuchi/kashira handle fittings with engraved pine needles. Wood handle covered in rayskin and wrapped with black silk ito cord, with copper menuki of a bow, quiver, and arrows. At the top of the handle, a large copper wire has been inserted to allow a brown/blue military sword knot to be tied. Many civilians that worked for the Army were allowed to carry swords, and they used family blades and mountings, with adaptations for carry in the field. OAL is 38". Condition is fair, the blade having a dark rust patina overall, minor pinprick pitting, a few small edge nicks, but no heavy pitting. The tang is crusted with heavy red rust. The copper habaki is very tight and cannot be moved. The tsuba guard shows a light rust patina and is missing some of the brass inlay. There is a lot of play in the guard to handle fit. The copper handle fittings show dings and minor scratches, and age. The rayskin on the handle shows losses in several places. The silk cord wrapping, while showing much age and soiling, is remarkably intact with little fraying. The sword knot shows heavy age and soiling, with the blue portion only visible in the tassle at the bottom but shows little to no fraying. Est.: $400-$600.
