Featured in this lot are two large, Frank Jay Haynes Yellowstone National Park boudoir cabinet card photos circa 1890-1900. Frank Jay Haynes, known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all who knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs of the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. The first photo is untitled and not numbered. It shows a view of a geyser in Yellowstone National Park erupting, or getting ready to erupt as a tower of steam and water start to rise. The back of the card reads, "Boudoir Views / Our collection of views in this popular size embraces scenery along the entire line of the Northern Pacific, including Yellowstone National Park, Clark's Forks and Columbia River, Mt. Hood, Mt. Tacoma, and Pacific Coast, Montana, Wyoming, Dakota, Etc / Descriptive Catalogue Free / Photographed and Published by F. Jay Haynes / Official Photographer N.P.R.R. / Fargo, Dakota". The second boudoir photo is numbered, "3659" and titled, "Great Falls from Red Rock". It shows the Great Falls of Yellowstone from the Red Rock viewing platform, the tallest waterfall in Yellowstone measuring 308 feet in height. The back of the card reads, "F. Jay Haynes, Offical Photographer N.P.R.R 392 Jackson St., St. Paul, Minn. / Send for Catalog of Views / Northern Pacific, Yellowstone Park, Pacific Coast and Alaska". Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. Both boudoir cabinet card photos show good condition overall with little wear present from their age and use over the years. No signs of obvious damage is present. They measure 8 1/2" L x 5 3/16" W.
