1915 Indian Single Engine 1915 Indian Single Engine

1915 Indian Single Engine

Lot #85 (Sale Order 4 of 221)

Ken Edmiston was a prominent figure in motorcycle racing for the Northwest and West Coast, building specialized engines for racing and street use. He applied his talents to everything from early side valve configurations through manufacturing his own OHV heads. This engine started life as a Power Plus Single Engine, then modified with a later model cam chest, to facilitate a return oil pump and a later Chief cylinder. Upon inspection, this engine was found to have all modern bearings, a polished connecting rod, and what appears to be a custom made cam and a high-compression head. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1917-1921 Harley Davidson Bicycle Collection

Lot #123 (Sale Order 39 of 221)

Sold only as a collection of eight. This is the only complete collection of all eight bicycle models sold by Harley Davidson from 1917 to 1921 known to exist. Five have good to very good original paint; three are restored to new condition. Group includes the rare board track racer (model 8) and the deluxe "motorcyke" (model 4) with the only original paint Harley Davidson bicycle frame tank known to exist. The tank was to resemble a motorcycle gas tank but actually held a battery for the electric headlight. Harley Davidson offered bicycles as a way to get boys into the dealerships; then, a few years later they would come back for a motorcycle; however most dealers protested because they did not want to waste time on bicycles. Bicycles were only sold for five years then discontinued so good originals are rare. It took 35 years to find and purchase these eight models. Parts should not be hard to locate, most interchange with the more common Indian Scout. Has bit of fun story and copy of a page from an Indian brochure circa 1933. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1941 Indian Four with Sidecar

Lot #143 (Sale Order 67 of 221)

From the Raymond Dhue collection - widely known throughout the AMCA as 'Gentleman Ray.' This gorgeous bike is a complete and accurate restoration of an Indian as it would have been driven off the showroom floor back in 1941. It won 'Senior' status through the Antique Motorcycle Club of America and has been shown in 'Winners Circle' at subsequent AMCA meets. It has also won top awards in other competitions. This 1941 Indian Four' cylinder model 441 represents the pinnacle of four cylinder motorcycle development in the USA prior to WWII. In Deluxe trim, it displays tank and fender stainless trim strips and fringed seat. The sidecar is a rare accessory with correct 'long' frame, also has Deluxe trim strips, Tonneau cover and an all-weather windshield. It is powered by a 78ci (1300cc) four cylinder in-line air-cooled motor that is very smooth and powerful for its time. It utilizes a 'suicide' foot clutch/tank mounted hand shift (three speed), and a magneto ignition. Lighting is by 6-volt battery/generator. This is a 'kick-start' motorcycle; skilled use of carburetor choke control, throttle and manual spark retarding are critical to prompt starts. It has earned an AMCA Winners Circle Award (98.0 points) for authenticity of restoration in 2000.

1911 Flanders 4

Lot #151 (Sale Order 75 of 221)

Flanders was one of the pioneer brands of American motorcycles in the early 1900s. Walter Flanders set up the first automotive mass production line with Henry Ford in 1903-1904 before leaving Ford to join Everett and Metzger to start the EMF brand of cars. Flanders motorcycles were produced in a Chelsea, Michigan, factory starting in 1910. After the 1914 model year, the brand faded from the scene as World War I came along. One of about 20 known to still exist, this 4 horsepower, 30.5 cubic inch, single cylinder machine is equipped with its original Schiebler carburetor and Splitdorf magneto. The engine features an automatic intake valve with only the exhaust valve being lifted by the camshaft. The leather drive belt operates directly from the crankshaft to the rear wheel. Bicycle type pedals and chain drive were used for starting. The Earl Flanders family of handlebar fame (no relation to the motorcycle’s manufacturer) purchased this machine from Bud Ekins in 1985. A complete restoration was performed by Tom Halstead in 1988 that included fresh Universal tires, Heilman leather seat and tool pouch. This is a rare opportunity acquire a fine example of an early American motorcycle. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

Lot #159 (Sale Order 83 of 221)

This bike has a fresh motor and some improvements to make it easier to use (electronic regulator/ignition). Last used in June 2011, supplied with bill of sale and all the pertinent import documentation. The Square Four was an Ariel motorcycle designed by Edward Turner, who devised the Square Four engine in 1928. At this time he was looking for work, showing drawings of his engine design to motorcycle manufacturers. The engine was essentially a pair of 'across frame' OHC parallel twins joined by their geared central flywheels, with one four cylinder block (or Monobloc) and one head. The idea for the engine was rejected by BSA, but adopted by Ariel. Thus it became the Ariel Square Four. Sold with a Bill of Sale/Import Papers/Dutch Registration.

1939 BMW R12

Lot #167 (Sale Order 91 of 221)

Beautifully restored to original condition. This horizontally opposed Twin 750cc with hand gear change runs and rides reliably. It is reported to have been captured from the Germans by the Poles in Russia at the end of World War II. Prior to the R12 model BMW had a problem with their frames cracking at the welds in sidecar service. It was necessary to design a completely new frame – and while they were at it a completely new motorcycle in order to cure it – so was born the R12 model. The new “star” frame could take the heavy bending loads of a sidecar without fatigue. It was also the forerunner of the modern perimeter motorcycle frame. The new 750cc engines were the largest and most powerful yet produced by BMW, a 16 horsepower side-valve, and a 28 horsepower OHV version. The R12 has proven to be one of BMW’s most important models.

1935 Harley Davidson VLD with Sidecar 1935 Harley Davidson VLD with Sidecar

1935 Harley Davidson VLD with Sidecar

Lot #196 (Sale Order 122 of 221)

This 1935 VLD was a ground up restoration by the current owner who purchased it 31 years ago. First place and National Senior Winner at Hershey in 1989. $52,000 spent on restoration with 915 hours alone from Reinholds’ Restoration in Reinholds Pennsylvania. Venetian Blue and Silver - with no pinstriping. Health sadly forces the sale of this very collectible 1935 Harley-Davidson VLD. The Harley-Davidson VL model motorcycle was a bold new design for one of the few motorcycle companies not ruined by the stock market crash of 1929. Harley’s traditional Olive Green paint - which had been used with little variation since 1917 - was dropped as the standard color after 1932. It was replaced by more vibrant two-tones. Flathead V-twins, which had replaced F-head versions in the late 1920s, came in 45- and “Big Twin” 74-cubic-inch versions. These were landmark engines; the 45 would continue to power three-wheeled Servi-Cars into the Seventies, and the Big Twin would form the basis for the famous EL overhead-valve Knucklehead” of 1936. Harley had a strong dealer network and the right products at the right time, and things were beginning to look up by 1934. The VL model line marks a very important era in the history of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

The primary chain alignment was checked and adjusted. The frame and most chassis parts were powder coated, the swing arm bushings were checked, and the side play adjusted. The alloy top and bottom triple clamps were replaced – a must for all Hurricanes. The new castings are made of superior material (LM25). Tapered steering head bearings were installed. The forks were rebuilt with new stanchions, new springs, and new fork seals. New rear shocks were installed. The wheels include new tires, tubes, wheel bearings, and Buchanan stainless steel spokes. The carbs were rebuilt. All jets were replaced, and extended ticklers were installed. Vacuum taps were added in order to make carburetor adjustment easier and more accurate. The electrical system has been upgraded to include solid state ignition and new 4 volt coils. All electrical components have been checked and work properly. All these upgrades were completed in order to make sure that the new owner will have the most reliable and enjoyable riding experience possible. The new owner may want to just show this bike, but this bike was built to ride.

1970 Triumph Tiger TR6R

Lot #228 (Sale Order 155 of 221)

You are looking at a fully restored, fully functional, numbers matching 1970 Triumph TR6R, the last year of the true classics. This bike is in superb to show quality condition. The restoration was done over a 30-month period beginning in 1992 through 1995. This was a true labor of love done by a former Triumph employee. The parts alone for the restoration exceeded $9,000. Nothing was left undone or left to chance. Upon completion of the restoration the owner/restorer rode the bike approximately 6,000 miles over a multi-year period. The bike was perfectly maintained during this period. According to this owner, the bike is 'utterly reliable' and 'never showed a hint of trouble.' It showed no leaks and mechanical or cosmetic issues. The bike was sold to its second owner (post restoration) in 2005. From that time until his death earlier in 2011 he rode the bike a total of 200 miles. It was mostly kept in storage in his dining room. This owner was a very accomplished motorcycle and high performance auto mechanic. When the seller purchased the bike it had been stored properly (dry gas tank and fuel system) inside his home for approximately one year.

This is the rarest of all the BSA Triples. Only 200 of the factory 5-speed Rocket 3s were built for 1971. This was the number required in order to have them approved by the AMA for the 1971 racing season. The year of 1971 turned out to be one of BSA’s most successful racing seasons, with Dick Mann winning the prestigious Daytona 200 mile road race on his BSA Rocket 3 to start the season off. Dick went on to win the AMA’s number one plate for 1971. On offer here is probably the finest example of a restored 1971 Rocket 3 in the world. 1977 Yamaha Hallman HL 500 Replica 1977 Yamaha Hallman HL 500 Replica

1977 Yamaha Hallman HL 500 Replica

Lot #231 (Sale Order 158 of 221)

1977 Restored Yamaha HL 500 Hallman MX Works Replica; one of only approximately 130 built making this bike very rare and desirable. This is a complete restoration with no expense spared on any area. Originally, Torsten Hallman a four time factory Husqvarna factory rider and four time world 250 champion, quaintly called 'Mr. Motocross' built an aftermarket kit that easily adapted to the Yamaha TT500 and XT500 motorcycles. This replica kit included frame, swing arm, foot pegs and brake pedal. Hallman and White Brothers also promoted a swing arm specifically for the project as well. The Hallman (HL) project required a TT/XT500 and a HL kit, increasing the rider's monetary investment therefore limiting the number of MX riders that could afford to build one of these rarely seen or ridden motorcycles. Two years after Torsten signed to develop the HL motocross bike, Yamaha won the 250 world championship and was a huge success helping Yamaha to be a dominant force in motorcycle MX racing to date. The HL scored Grand Prix points but was also noted as being a fantastic PR-project. It was on nearly every motorcycle magazine's front page, numerous articles and pictures of the incredible Yamaha 500cc motor and single cylinder bike! XT500 and TT500 sales sky rocketed resulting in a phenomenal success for Yamaha and Torsten Hallman. Selling here today is a restored Yamaha TT500 HL replica bike. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1935 Vincent-HRD Comet

Lot #236 (Sale Order 163 of 221)

The Vincent-HRD marque originated in 1928 when Philip C Vincent acquired the name, jigs, tools and patterns of the recently liquidated HRD Company. (HRD stood for Howard Raymond Davies, the Isle of Man TT winner who had founded the firm in 1924). Like Davies before him, Vincent relied on proprietary engines until increasing dissatisfaction with suppliers led to the creation of Vincent’s own 500cc single in 1934, which was later doubled up to create the legendary Series-A Rapide V-twin. Post-war this situation was reversed, with an all-new V-twin appearing first, in May 1946, followed by the single-cylinder version in 1949. The shape of the crankcases narrows the indentation to what is known as “an intermediate” of which there were less than 10. The engine number M637 should read C63 – possibly changed by the factory as was often done to these early ‘A’ Singles. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1948 Indian Scout Big Base 1948 Indian Scout Big Base

1948 Indian Scout Big Base

Lot #247 (Sale Order 174 of 221)

One of the fifty 1948 “Big Base” Scouts originally built by the Indian factory. The 50 made were numbered 101-150; this motorcycle has an engine number of FDH116. Originally owned and raced by Bob Lutz in the greater Midwest from 1948-1965. He crashed hard in 1965, and gave up racing, intending on restoring the bike back to original some day. Bob had originally called the bike the “Goat.” Originally it was painted bright green (as evidenced by the spare hill climb wheel). Bob had modified the bike for dirt track racing, by using a lighter “junior scout” front end, tank, and removal of all road racing equipment. He used a 2 into 1 exhaust system which he claimed resulted in more low end torque, needed for dirt track racing. Only 50 of these 648 Scouts were made by Indian Motorcycle Company for sale to “existing Indian racers.” They were not sold to the general public. It is not known how many of the 50 bikes originally produced survive today. Some estimate seven, of which five are in road racing trim, and two are dirt track racers, this being one of the two. This bike now sports new period correct paint. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1929 Harley Davidson JDH

Lot #249 (Sale Order 176 of 221)

This model features small tanks, speedster handlebars, 18 inch clincher rims, and large spoked rear hub. Finished in Olive green. This bike has undergone a 14 month ground up restoration. Restored to run but has not had fluids or been started since restoration was completed. 1929 was the last year for Harley to sell the J series motorcycle. It was the only year the J series were factory equipped with the dual bullet headlights, the electric switch panel and ammeter on the handlebars, and the 4 tube Pan O'Pipes' exhaust muffler set up. In its day the Harley Davidson JDH, known as the Two-Cam Harley, was the fastest road bike the company ever offered to the public and likely the fastest bike on the streets. Reportedly it could reach speeds of 85-100 mph with the proper tuning. The Two-Cam engine earned a lasting reputation for its power and acceleration in racing. Harley Davidson provided the ultimate motorcycle by joining its specialized racing engine with the chassis of their standard JD street motorcycle. Nearly 24,000 motorcycles were produced by Harley Davidson in 1929, yet there were probably less than 100 of these very special JDH models built. Not every dealer was able to secure one. The JDH sold for more than many of the automobiles of the day. Sold with a Bill of Sale.

1959 Riverside Nassau C-80 Scooter

Lot #289 (Sale Order 216 of 221)

Unrestored that looks like new. This 1959 Riverside Nassau motor scooter was imported from Mitsibushi in Japan for Montgomery Wards to compete with Vespa which was sold through Sears. This was Mitsubishi’s first product sold in the U.S. This may be the only one like it in existence today. It had an overhead cam motor that developed 5hp which was really good for those days and technically advanced for that era. Presently this bike has been retrofitted with a 4.5hp Honda four stroke engine with centrifugal clutch and chain drive with electric start. The scooter has only been used for parades and special events. The reason for the Honda engine is to preserve the original engine for which there is no replacement. The original engine is a 124cc OHV and all accessories including a complete service manual comes with it. The retrofit did not require any welding or modifications to the frame and can be completely restored to original in a very short time. The scooter has never been laid down and is in great original condition. Titled in Washington by engine number.
