Sale Highlight! Reeve Village Site Bird Effigy Pipe. 2 9/16" long. Still retains one of the original shell eye inlays. Found in November 1973 by Ted Lazarus in Lake Co., Ohio. Pictured on the cover of the 1979 book "Prehistoric Pipes" by Ahlstrom. A copy of this book is also included with the pipe. The Full Story: In November 1973, as bulldozers and backhoes were prepping land in Lake County Ohio for a new condominium complex, they unearthed some amazing prehistoric artifacts. The area was named The Reeve Village Site. One of the collectors present recovering artifacts before the heavy equipment destroyed them was Ted Lazarus - who was hunting the site with his collector friends. Ted was the finder of this amazing bird effigy pipe as they raked through the piles of dirt being dropped by a backhoe that was there digging one of the Condo basements. With a punctate design and still retaining one of the original drilled shell eyes, this pipe was so exceptional in design and quality that it was featured on the cover of the Prehistoric Pipes book published by Richard Ahlstrom and the Archaeological Society of Ohio in 1979. The pipe stayed in the Lazarus family for the last 50+ years, still in the original little box Ted placed it in back in 1973. Mr. Lazarus passed about 5 years ago and the family would like to see this pipe back in the hands of an appreciative collector.
