• Lot 146: Large Antique Religious Church Confessional: Belgium church oratory, c. 1890, paneled oak having incised and applied decorative carving, a 24" cross at the top center of the split pediment, below are two 6" winged cherubs depicted in relief, at the lower center a paneled door topped by two small carved screen doors opening to an area for the priest, the interior with sliding grills at either side allowing communication with the two penitent compartments located at both ends of the booth, 140"h, 111"w, 41"d, note: dismantles for transport*
• Lot 164: Large Antique Religious Oil Painting, Cuzco School: Spectacular oil on canvas of the Madonna and child, from the Cuzco school, late 17th c. , a pair of brightly painted cherubs place a heavily gilded crown on the head of Mary, she holds a candle in her right hand and a basket with two doves, in her left is the Christ child holding the celestial orb and his mothers standard, the child is dressed in contemporary costume, a pair of musical angels flank her sides while attendant angels support her base, the heavily gilded gown and tunic are covered with brightly painted flowers, areas of cracklure only add to the authentic quality of this sumptuous painting, a gilded modern frame appropriate to the style of painting, hand sewn panels, edge lined, sight: 66. 75"h, 50. 5"w, overall: 74. 5"h, 57. 75"w, 3"d, 33lbs – One of thirteen fine Peruvian Spanish Colonial Paintings in this auction.
• Lot 166: Large Antique Religious Oil Painting, Cuzco School: Unframed oil on canvas, Cuzco school, mid 18th c. , the Madonna and child are framed by the sacred heart which is upheld by attendant saint Dominic and saint Francis, the seated Madonna and child offer the rosary to the attendant saints, surrounded by cherubs offering flowers and incense, the whole surmounted by the trinity in the form of a seated Christ, dove, and seated god, the overall canvas is faded and worn, the overall effect is one of charm and tenderness, edge lined with cotton fabric, overall: 66. 25"h, 49"w, 1. 5"d, 12lb
• Lot 180: Cristo Crucificado, Juan Miguel Herrera, new Mexico: New Mexican carved wood bulto, "cristo crucifixado", c. 1870-80, by famed sinter Juan Miguel Herrera (1835-1905), carved aspen wood in a gesso and polychrome finish, the simple wooden cross joined by a single iron pin surmounted by a simple titulum, the Latin letters inri banded with red on a white ground, the tender and benevolent face of the crucified Christ with downcast eyes, outstretched arms with trails of blood on a pale white ground, raw hide loin cloth, attenuated and knee caps soaked in blood extremities of limbs fastened by wood pins, a true masterpiece of southwest ecclesiastical art, similar crucifixes found in the Santa Fe museum of art and certain missions, extremely scarce to the market, new Mexico (arroyo Honda), overall: 52"h, 31"w, 10"d, corpus: 29"l, 29"w , 5lbs**note: purchased from Santa Fe, nm, august 2006, for $35,590. 00* copy of receipt available upon request*
• Lot 183: Death Cart Figure , Cruz Esteban Lopez, New Mexico: “Dona Sebastiana,” by cruz esteban lopez, a magnificent life-size modern re-interpretation of an 18th c. New Mexican processional death cart, the figure beautifully carved, interpreted out of gnarled cottonwood, suggesting bone ligatures, the carved wooden skull adorned with horse hair, the eye sockets filled with mica, the rib cage being of one solid piece, the cart cleverly constructed of pickets, wheels being from solid log rounds, the ensemble includes a bow, arrow, sickle, and the death figure, another example by the artist found in the Albuquerque museum, similar examples exhibited at the Smithsonian and other museums, the piece comes with a book full of notes and photos from the artist, 72. 5", 85", 44"
