Cal. 280 Rem. S# 4842 (on bottom of action visible when removed from stock). New England Custom Gun Service Ltd. was founded by Dietrich Apel. He started working in his grandfather Franz Jaeger's gunsmithing shop before WWII. After the war, he emigrated to America and worked for his uncle Paul Jaeger in Philadelphia for a few years. Later, he worked for Sturm Ruger in Newport, NH. He returned to Jaeger's in 1977 as manager. NECG was opened in 1986. Dietrich died in 2016, but New England Custom Gun Service LTD continues as a primary source for the best quality gunsmithing, finely crafted German sights, and accessories, including Schmidt & Bender scopes and AYA shotguns. This attractive rifle has a 23" Walter medium-weight sporter barrel fitted with a quarter rib, banded on the front sight ramp, and a sling eye. The rib is nicely shaded on top, and the caliber is engraved on the central oval. The rib is also fitted with a standing leaf rear sight that is adjustable for elevation. The front ramp is fitted with an NECG hood and a gold bead front sight. The top of the barrel is engraved "N.E.C.G. Plainfield N.H.". DWM Model 1909 Argentine action (prized by custom gunsmiths) has had the bridge reshaped and QD EAW-type scope bases installed. Per consignor, the action was obtained from Germany (imported for NECG by CAI) as new old stock receiving its first barrel from NECG. The bolt has an engine-turned body, a lowered bolt handle with a checkered knob, an EAW shroud, and M70-type safety. A Recknagel trigger is installed. Bottom metal with hinged straddle floorplate is by Blackburn. The capped pistol grip stock of very nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut measures 14-1/2" over a skeleton steel buttplate. The grip cap is also made of skeletonized steel. Stock features a classic shadowline cheekpiece, an ebony forend tip, and a rear sling loop. Point pattern 24 LPI checkering is very well done and has mullered fore and aft borders. Forend checkering wraps completely around the stock. The rifle is fitted with a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6X 42 30mm scope with three posts and a crosshair reticle in EAW QD swing-off rings (the consignor states the model was personally suggested by Dietrich). The consignor notes that the rifle took multiple years to complete. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: various advertising for NECG, including photographs of this rifle, hidden details, price lists, etc. Various correspondences were received regarding the building of this rifle. Including quote. Invoice dated 2005 detailing the work performed to build this fine rifle totaling $8,826.15 in 2005. Not including $700 for the stock blank. Also included is a test target showing 3/4" group at 100 yds and a box for scope with paperwork. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, retaining nearly all custom finishes on wood and metal with only a scattering of faint marks mostly found on stock. Bore is bright and shiny. The action is smooth. The scope is also exceptionally fine and optically clear. A handsome rifle well thought out, in great caliber; sometimes referred to as the 7mm Remington Express. (23-5745/MGM). MODERN. $4,000-6,000.
