According to the U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Production chart, this M1873 was produced in 1884. MARKINGS: Breech-Block - "US/ MODEL/ 1873", Lock Plate - Eagle/Shield Motif & "U.S./SPRINGFIELD", Buttplate - "U.S.", Left Side Of Stock - Inspector's Cartouche, Left Side Of Barrel At The Breech - "V"/"P"/ Eagle Head/"P" & "S", Under Stock At The Grip - Circle "P" (proofed) and Barrel Bands - "U". SPECS: 32 5/8" Barrel, adjustable folding ladder rear sight, pinned blade front sight, smooth hardwood stock with metal nose cap, curved metal buttplate, metal rod and sling rings. CONDITION: This gun is showing age & wear, has a nice sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: The Springfield Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army and was manufactured from 1873–1892. The Model 1873 was the fifth variation of the Allin trapdoor design and was named for its hinged breechblock which opened like a trapdoor. The infantry rifle model featured a 32 5/8" barrel while the cavalry carbine used a 22" barrel. It was superseded by an improved model, the Springfield Model 1884.
