WWII Japanese Kai-Gunto Navy Officer's Sword, with Brown Knot, 25.75" high-quality stainless steel blade made by the Tenshozan naval forge in Kamakura prefecture. Blade tang is signed "Ten Sho Zen Tan Ren Jo saku" with the anchor arsenal stamp, and dated on the other side of the tang "Showa 18 Roku Nen Gatsu" (One day in June 1943). Blade is a shinogi-zukuri shape with a chu-kissaki medium point, and has a faint straight suguha temperline. The habaki is silver washed copper. Mounts are mid-war quality with gold gilt fittings, wood handle covered in black rayskin, with brown silk ito cord wrapping, and wood saya scabbard covered with polished sharkskin with two hangers. Steel tsuba guard is black with large black seppas having a sunray design, and two gold tone smaller seppas on either side. Tsuba and seppas all have matching assembly numbers "276". Brown woven sarute loop for the sword knot to attach to. OAL is 38". Condition is very good, the blade in a nice state of polish, with a couple of minor stains that should clean up well. There is one tiny edge nick, almost not worth mentioning. Metal fittings of the mounts show age, oxidation, and minor wear. The ito cord wrapping on the handle shows minor wear on the highpoints and some light soiling from use. Brown navy knot is in excellent condition. Tsuba shows some light wear to the finish on the edge. Saya scabbard is very nice with a few small scrapes and light wear spots mainly near the bottom on one side. Overall, a very nice example. Est.: $1,200-$1,500.
