Antique Composite U.S. Model 1816 Harpers Ferry Flintlock Musket, Type III, Shortened to Model 1817 Artillery Length and Re-Converted from Percussion, NVSN, .74 cal., 36" round barrel marked "V"/"P"/(eagle head)" at left breech; beveled lockplate with separate brass pan is marked "(federal eagle)/US" ahead of reinforced cock, "Harpers/Ferry/1831" vertically behind; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling swivel on rounded boss, straight buttplate, 3 spring-retained bands (top of the double-strap type with blade sight, middle with swivel stud, lower marked "19"). Oil-finished walnut 48.37" fullstock has a typical high comb. Mfg'd ca. 1831. Condition is fair as configured, the barrel shortened and shot (or bored) out from .69 cal., having crude weld repairs at top tang and area of former percussion nipple, not drilled for touchhole. Lock with replacement frizzen and spring, the cock missing its top jaw and screw, the high-comb stock perhaps from a M-1812 Type I musket. Metal shows generally smooth gray-brown, scattered cleaned erosion (pitting at barrel breech), good markings (sharp on lock). Stock shows old repaired thru-break at wrist, chips at top tang/rear of lock, crude re-shaping at middle band, and chipping at ramrod channel. Ramrod is a crude replacement. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows moderate erosion. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
