Lot of Two (2) U.S. M1860 Enlisted Cavalry Swords, with Scabbards: 1) The 34.5" blade has large and small fullers, maker marked at the ricasso by "D. J. Millard", also marked "U.S.", "E.H.", 1862. Brass crossguard with flat quillion, three-branch finger guard is marked "8G" at the top where it meets the pommel. Grooved wood grip is covered with dark brown leather and is missing the wire wrapping. Brass pommel with markings on top of "G.H.W." and "54 H". Steel scabbard with two hanging rings. No visible inspector's markings on scabbard. Condition is fair, the blade has a cleaned spotted rust patina and age graying overall, but no edge nicks. Original leather blade washer is cracked and worn. Guard and finger branches are in good condition with a dark uncleaned patina, a few small dings, and scratches. Pommel shows light dings and scratches. Grip is cracked in the center from top to bottom. Leather is cracked along the same line showing scuffs and scratches. Guard and grip are a loose fit to the blade. Scabbard is heavily pitted with a dark rust patina overall and a couple of large dents near the bottom. 2) The 34.75" blade has large and small fullers, maker marked at the ricasso by Ames, also marked "U.S." "J.H.", 1860. Brass crossguard with turned-down quillion, three-branch finger guard with the outer branch bent down toward the other two. Grooved wood grip covered with dark brown leather and wrapped with a single twisted brass wire. Brass pommel marked "W.A.J" on top. Steel scabbard with two hanging rings and no visible inspector's markings. Condition is fair to good, the blade with a dark rust patina overall but no heavy pitting, some evidence of sharpening to the blade, and no edge nicks. The original leather blade washer is present and in good condition. Guard, branches, and pommel have a nice dark, uncleaned patina, with small scratches and dings from use. As mentioned above, the outer branch of the finger guard is bent down, and the main branch to the pommel shows a slight "S" shape bend. Wood grip is cracked in two places, the leather covering shows heavy scuffs, gouges, and losses to the leather. Wire wrapping is all intact and tight. Scabbard is lightly pitted with heavier pitting near the drag. It has a dark rust patina overall and one large dent near the bottom. Est.: $600-$900/Lot.
