High Quality Russian Model 1881/1909 Officer's Shashka Sword, 33" etched decorated blade, single wide fuller running about 3/4s of the way down the blade. Blade is etched with floral and architectural designs with gold fire gilding that covers about half the length. Gilded brass "D" guard with turned-down quillion having a hollow circle at the tip. Smooth grip ferrule and pommel with grooved cap. Hilt fittings have no raised or engraved decorations like most Russian officer's swords. There is a stamped number "573" on the underside of the quillion, and a small Russian eagle stamp with Cyrillic lettering on the top side of the quillion. Grip is carved, grooved buffalo horn. There is no scabbard present. OAL is 38.5". Condition is good, the fittings showing wear to the gold gilding which only remains in some protected areas. Blade shows numerous minor rust and fingerprint rust stains, a few small edge nicks, and wear to the gold gilding of the etched designs. There is no pitting on the blade. Remnants of the original thin red felt blade washer are present. Horn grip shows some minor chipping around the top and bottom edges but is overall in good condition. Hilt is tight to the blade. Maker marked "Schaaf Sohne St. Petersburg" at the ricasso. Schaaf & Sohne was a German maker who had a warrant to make swords granted by the Imperial Russian court. Est.: $500-$1,000.
