British Naval Officer's Sword, ca.1775-1820, with a small sword type guard and hilt (ca. 1775), but fitted with a later wide blade (ca. 1796-1820). The 32" blade shows engraved decorations that are worn and muted, and a wide single fuller running the full length. Blade has been nickel plated at some time in the past. There are no visible maker's marks. Hilt is gilded bronze with a flat and thin guard, having a beaded rim on top with engraved details of British flags, anchors, military motifs, and what looks like a family crest. There are quillions on both sides of the guard. The finger "D" guard is decorated in the center with a beaded diamond design. The urn-shaped pommel has small crowns engraved on both sides as does the lower part of the hilt under the grip which has tightly wound twisted brass or copper wire of two sizes. OAL is 38.25". There is no scabbard present. Condition is good, the blade showing muted details, oxidation and minor flaking to the nickel-plated finish, but no edge nicks. Hilt retains a fair amount of its original gold fire gilt finish, with wear to the high edges and sides of the pommel, numerous small scratches and scrapes overall, and soiling to the top of the guard. Grip wire is nice and tight. Hilt and guard are loose on the blade, with a lot of play. Guard is bent in the middle, a little more than normal. Est.: $400-$800.
