Lot of Two (2) Napoleonic French Officer's Swords: 1) French cavalry officer's sword, ca. 1800-1840, etched decorated 35" curved blade with a single wide fuller. Hard to read maker's marking at the ricasoo. Engraved brass crossguard and curved quillion, three-branch finger guard is broken at the top on all three branches. Pointed oval-shaped langets with engraved decoration. Grooved wood grip covered in brown leather and wrapped with one large braided wire and two small straight wires. Engraved backstrap and pommel. No scabbard. Condition is fair, the blade with a dark rust patina overall, a few edge nicks, and remnants of the gold gilt on some of the etched blade decorations mainly near the ricasso area. Guards, langets, and backstrap have a dark patina to the brass, with only a small bit of the gilt finish remaining in some protected areas. 2) French officer's sword, ca. 1800-1840, 30" slightly curved blade with single wide fuller, etched decorations near the top of the blade. Brass crossguard with shield-shaped langets, front langet is decorated with a helmet and sword. Panther head curved quillion. Decorated flat finger guard with lion's head and floral motif. Curved pommel with large lion's head. Checkered light brown wood grip with a twisted wire repair at the bottom. No maker's markings. No scabbard. Condition is good, the blade with cleaned lightly pitted rust patina overall, numerous small edge nicks, and a clipped point. Brass of the guards and pommel has been polished in the recent past but has a pleasing patina and a small amount of old polish residue on one side of the pommel. Grip is cracked on both sides and shows wear to the surface, with some possible varnish added. As mentioned above, the grip has been wrapped at the bottom with twisted brass wire to hold it together. Est.: $500-$1,000/Lot.
