Group of Three (3) European Smallswords: 1, Smallsword, possibly British, ca. 1750, triangular 33" long blade with gilt etched decorations, faint maker's mark "Tells & Co."?, with replacement blade washer. Thin iron cupped guard with riveted decorations. Intact quillion and finger loops. Three ball round finger guard, faceted iron grip and pommel. No scabbard. Condition is good, the blade has a dark patina overall with no traces of the original bluing. Gold gilt is still present around the etched decorations. Guard, grip, and pommel have a dark uncleaned patina. Pommel is loose and rotates, detaching itself from the finger guard. 2. Smallsword, possibly Dutch or Italian, ca. 1650-1750, diamond-shaped 32.5" blade with small fuller near the ricasso area. Fancy pierced decorated cast iron two-lobe cupped guard. Cast crossguard with broken/missing quillion, intact finger loops, and fancy pierced finger guard. Spiral cast iron grip with nodule designs, with similar pommel. No scabbard. Condition is good, the blade with a dark rust patina, pitted surface mainly near the tip, and slight bend near the tip. Guard shows heavy age and dark rust patina. Grip, guards, and pommel show a dark rust patina overall, with some minor pitting. Pommel and guards are tight to the blade, with just the slightest movement in the grip itself. 3. Smallsword or Court sword, probably French or German, ca. 1770-1810, triangular 32.75" blade with etched decorations. Blade maker marked at the bottom "A. S. & C." Clamshell front guard with winged horses on either side of a central wreath. Cast brass decorated crossguard, quillion, and finger guard. Rectangular grip with decorated brass fittings on top, bottom, and sides. Black ebony wood checkered grip panels. Cast brass pommel with the face of a Roman goddess on front and back. No scabbard. Condition is good, the blade showing age graying, light rust, faint remnants of gold gilt on the etched decorations, with a slight bend near the tip. Guard and handle fittings show a dark aged patina to the brass. The central roundel on the clamshell shows heavy wear to the carved decoration. Grip panels are nice with no cracks, showing some age and soiling. Handle is tight to the blade but there is some play in the clamshell guard. Est.: $900-$1,500/Lot.
